Is it time?
« on: April 06, 2010, 12:34:26 PM »
I just came across this board and have a few questions. IS IT JUST TIME TO GET RID OF IT ALL? Let me know what you think. I refuse to do a comb over and I feel like that is what it looks like now. I am thinking about starting out with just a buzz, but my question is how short to start with. I was thinking a 2 but is that to long for a buzz cut? I have a definite crown and getting pretty thin in front now too.

Welcome. I too would have to say that it is time.
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

You're right on the money about not doing a combover--I went that way for 10+ years, maybe even 15, and it was a mistake, one big one that I wish I had never done.  Honestly, I thought I was looking at my own head when I first glanced at the pictures :o.
Buzz, yes--that's what I did.  Not for a long period of time though, IMO.  I started by having my barber do a 4.  Less than a week later, I went back for a 3.  Then my cousin, who shared the genetic trait and had gone sly himself--yes a trait it's not in any way, shape for form a disease or deformity--gave me his old clipper--Wahl, still have it for my beard!
I maintained it at a 3 for about another week, then took it to a 2 myself for a week or so.  I had the "itch" and it was going to get scratched, the itch to be smooth and clean.  I noticed, even at a 4 and more so as I progressed from a 3 to a 2 that bright overhead lights made me look like all I had left was a horseshoe, a look I really didn't like at all.  I moved to a 1--and the feel was tremendous rubbing my head.  Then, three days later, no guard, gym, shower & shave.  All this from September 7 to October 12! 8).  Never looked back.  The guys here were a real rock to lean on getting acquainted w/ the shadow, the "new dude" in the mirror.  They shared the techniques, shaving stuff, etc. and encouragement.  Now, at 2 1/2 years, I'm passing it on.
Relax, take as much time in the buzz or as little as you're comfortable with--it is all about making yourself comfortable, improving your overall appearance, gaining confidence.  And all of that does come.  People you see at the laundry, the drugstore and other places all of a sudden remember your name, you'll notice a lot of other guys sporting the haircut, and most of all you won't be worrying about what's left of the hair.  The mpb continues, hidden in plain sight.  You're only regret once you're sly will probably be why you didn't do this sooner.  It's all about you, not your family and friends, and what they want, no one but you.

Thanks. I would like to get it done before the summer tan starts ( I get fairly dark without trying) so I don't have to "catch up" the sides to the top. I guess I should also mention the wife. As I have seen others on her say family was against it, but I don't get it. Why would she care so much. It is not like I ever tell her how to get hers done. She knows it is a losing battle that I am going to do what I want with my hair, but do you think taking it down slow will help her warm up to it better. It not like I have it very long now the pic. I posted is about as long as I let it get. I usually have a 1 on the sides anyway during the summer.

One more thing buzzed to the skin vs. shaved with a razor? I guess that is something I can decide when I get there.

Wow :), you said you'd only just found this site today, but what you have said has been said by so many here--the wives never do ask us, why should be ask them.  Well, you're probably thinking this already, but "Ask forgiveness, not permission!"  If you're lucky she'll adapt, otherwise you can hang out with guys like me and several others whose wives never really have bought into it 100%--toleration is about all we get >:(.  But it's for me, as I said, this is all about feeling good yourself.
Pardon me for saying this but you seem to be on the "fast track!"  Not bad, not bad at all! O0

Looks very similar to others but feels completely different. You'll see...

I'll second that! The fell of a smooth scalp is the reason I have only skipped 2 days out of the last 30.

That is what I thought, it is time. I said I had one more question but I got many really. Scars?? I got a good on the front right of my head. I can't see it through what is left of my hair but I can tell by feeling it will be seen, maybe not as bad as I think it will. Would that be a deal breaker for anyone. About 1 1/2" length. Knocked stupid when it happened.  :XX anyone else got em.

Several, from two large spots from skin cancer--one is white, one is an indentation.  Scars are the "personality" of the dome.  No one notices them, but as you well know, a combover stands out, as does the Bozo Ring!.  :(

Welcome to the Forum LITS!

It's past time my Friend....... start with the buzz if you're more comfortable trying that first. Remember.... nothing beats a shave with a good brush, good shave crem, and a sharp blade.
