I'm so bad at that...I generally have to hire out 
Lowe's - and some other big box home improvement chains - offer classes to get you started on projects. They are usually pretty good for basic how-to.
How about a book called Home Improvement For Dummies

kinda like a baseball bat wrapped at the top with a big oily rag...

Unfortunately, by this approach I seem to have compounded the home repair issues.

It's "Dome Improvement for Homies"
for the most part the repairs are all pretty much cosmetic, there is one place i need to put a screw in the ceiling and that should do it.... but other than that the fence in the back yard needs work but i might hold that off for a year or 2 to save the money.
