can you still lose your hair when your completely sly?
« on: October 02, 2008, 12:16:35 AM »
because i swear my receding hairline is getting thinner and thinner. its really starting to get me depressed. i go on and off with how i feel. somedays i like how i look, but then other days im bummed out and cant even look in the mirror after i shave.

whether im feelin good about my look or bad about my look i always have this constant paranoia and uncomfort around large groups of people because of the "receding shadow" issue. i guess i feel like everyone thinks i look weird cuz of it. i find it hard to look people in the eye when talking to them because of it, i avoid taking pictures, i wear hats often, and ive even went as far as talking to people with my head turned at a different angle so they cant see my hairline straight on. im pathetic lol  :(

as you can tell todays been one of those "negative feeling" days. i guess i just needed a place to vent. sorry.  :-\

It's OK dude.  We all have days, trust me.  When I shaved my head and went sly, it was totally my choice.  I have a full head of hair albeit going grey FAST!

I have a noticeable shadow, but it's not about the shadow.  It's about being confident and most importantly being yourself.  I bet you notice it a lot more than anybody else.  hang in there.

Not to sound like a jerk..... but I don't care if mine is still disappearing. I wish it would all just exit the premises.

Ghost, I imagine at your age, it can be difficult, but... if you don't like the way you look with your hair grown out, and can't imagine drug, rugs, or plugs, you have made the right choice, and take comfort in knowing that many people are in your position.  You have chosen the best option.  If nothing else, come here and vent; many experience the same feelings.  It's a great place for support.  Or you can always go out in public and laugh at all of the bad MPB dudes out there and how foolish many of them look.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

It's OK to vent, ghost.  Sometimes even faking your confidence, can bring on real confidence.  I know it sounds strange, but if you convince yourself that you're a great person, and the thoughts of others don't matter, it becomes a reality.  I've had many bad days, and i'm sure there will be more to come, but just putting myself in that mindset can help out.
I know you'll be fine.  Just try making eye contact with people today, you should get a good response.

When I first went sly, I just had the receeding hairline.  While I will not claim that I am severely MPB, I do have some noticeable thinning.  When I grew hair back one time, a coworker noticed that the back of my head was see through.  That has since been confirmed when I have seen video and photos of myself that way.  These pic were taken after I had initially gone sly and had grown it back.  In fact there is a episode of Seinfeld where Elaine dates a guy who shaves his head and when he grows it back, notices that he is going bald!  So YES, you can lose more hair after going sly!

MPB is a fact of life for men.  It comes early for some, and the general population knows this.  There are some superficial people out there, but I can't judge someone for something they have no control over.

Being sly is the best choice when nature has its way.  Having a shadow that reveals a receeding hairline always looks better than having hair, which makes it much more obvious.

I can tell when I see a sly guy who's balding, and my first thought is "bravo" for him for making the right choice.

I guess I'm rather unique in that I could care less if my hair falls out.  I know how to make it look good no matter what.

As for your topic question, your hair really doesn't know if it's shaved or not.  Shaving won't make balding happen any faster.

Turn it into a positive, bro. Instead of saying "Dangit, more hair's falling out! :Xo!" say "YES! That's less I have to shave O0"

i truly appreciate all the support. reading your responses has helped. ill eventually get over the self consciousness hopefully. i guess its just overwhelming when your only 20 (just turned 20) and your already balding. people can be ignorant and look at you like your a freak etc. and dont get me wrong. i LOVE being sly. i just wish i was COMPLETELY sly so i can get away from the receding shadow (the main reason i started shaving in the first place) but w/e. lifes life. im gonna have to boost my self esteem up thats all i can do. ill take little steps. ill try to ignore all the negative thoughts  and replace em with good. ill also try to boost my confidence. the main thing is i have none. since going sly i havent talked to ladies cuz i wasnt comfortable with the look. thatll definately change from now on too. thanks for everything guys!

sorry to post so late. Been pretty damn busy lately.

Dude, you look great. You will have nothing to worry about with the ladies. Trust me, lots of people find slyness a turn-on - I get plenty of headrubs from ladies and I'm not even into females! LOL

I know it must feel weird for you being so young and losing your hair. To be realistic, if you're balding that early, you will probably have NO hair on the top of your head before you turn 30. That's the way it usually goes - so no more shadow hairline for you in just a few years! But you've done the best thing by going sly preemptively before it shows too much.

So I say, develop your own sense of style, fashion, etc. in some way that FLAUNTS your bald look rather than worrying about it! And when you turn 21, get yourself a new driver's license pic with your new bald look. That's a very affirming step, trust me - it just makes it undeniable that you're bald and pround! And you won't get funny looks when you show it to buy drinks and stuff.

Good luck buddy! You're gonna be a kick-ass baldie.

ghost,
i feel your pain, i'm sure we've all been there at some point. i'm 24, and i've been receeding/thinning since i was 17. and i was  going back and forth between shaving, using a #1, and growing back what little i have from 18-23. finally just deciding to keep it shaved and say $%ck it has set me free. i still have days when i feel like crap when i look in the mirror, and others when i feel great. mpb sucks, and any 'friends' we have that ridicule us for our decision are not friends at all. and i'd agree that most women don't really care too much about hair. those that do are obviously childish and superficial, and i wouldn't want a woman like that anyways. i too have been an avid hat wearer. i used to wear hats 24/7 when i was a kid because i loved them. then i HAD to wear them i felt to hide my balding head. the best thing to do is just shave it, try your best to accept it, and say F#$% it!! be yourself, and don't hide who you are under a hat

In a word, yes.  Your hair will continue to thin and recede whether you shave it or not.  Since you've chosen to shave it, this is actually a good thing because over the course of time, it results in less shadow and less hair that you have to shave every morning.   I'm at a point now where I actually have no idea how much hair I'd have if I stopped shaving.  I do know that there's significantly less than there used to be and I've probably crossed the threshold from "balding" to "bald".

It's normal to feel ambivalent about it but the negative feelings subside over time.  Take pride in knowing that you're handling it the right way and remember that we're always here for you when your spirits need a lift.

shaving your head wil not affect MPB in anyway. & dont worry about ur hairline shadow, im 19 & i have a hourseshoe hairline going into just the circle, but my hair past that it thick as anything. You should do some research into MPB to put your mind at ease if you have'nt already. Just stick to shaving you head trust me.

I love being sly.  So if my hair would disappear...just make it that much easier shaving in the mornings.  The sly look suits you...so don't fret it...keep it up.
