Work reactions...
« on: July 23, 2008, 03:48:32 PM »
Well I thought I would post some of my reactions. I work for a pretty big office in a pretty uptight office atmosphere.
So my reactions were varied...
Couple girls said it looked good and it suits me and "not a lot of people could wear that look"
Couple guys said it looked good and that if they ever went bald would certainly wear it just like me. (this was in the presence of some other guys who were receeding balding or had the horseshoe)
Some people said nothing but definitely stared and did some double takes.
The office gossip hounds (you know who you are--male and female) found it to be one more thing to whisper about.
Fellow balding men who I have never talked to seemed to be really happy to see me...like I was some type of bald hero or something.

Outside of all that I would say the majority reaction was no reaction at all.   Sometimes I think people just dont know what to say...they think maybe your sick, or a skinhead, or joined a biker club or going thru a mid life crisis...(not old enough for that yet but not that far from it)
Also I think some people for whatever reason will always view total baldness as "weird" and until they come accross someone they know personally who is balding they will never understand...makes me think of the seinfeld episode when Elaine was dating a sly guy and Jerry and everyone else were goofing on him because he looked like he was from the "future"

So thats it---family/friends all had good reactions but I havent seen EVERYONE just yet.
I know this...even if every reaction was bad...I will NEVER grow my hair back. I like it and really...does anyone else REALLY matter when were talking about your own head ?

Good to hear man  O0

My workplace was pretty good about it too. People said it looked good and that I definitely pull it off well. The only thing that bugged me is when a couple asked "why did you do it?". I still don't have a short answer for why, since there are about 5 or 6 reasons I did it.

LOL, I know what you mean.  Culture plays a big part on how people perceive you, especially mine.  A few months back during a family reunion, many family members who haven't seen me in a while were wondering if I was sick, on drugs, or joined a monastery since I lost weight AND had my head shaved.

However, most people I talk to say it suits me well.  In fact, as far as work is concerned, I find most of my patients take me much more seriously since my MPB is perceived as "wisdom" I guess.  Hehe.

Dont you think this sums it up though.  That maybe that it is just like someone coming in with a new hair colour.  No one actually cares much beyond the first 'wow nice do' moment.  I was chatting to my other half about the whole people getting depressed about hair thing yesterday, and her response was, ' I hate seeing pictures of you with hair, i dont like it, it isnt you'.  Maybe i have become sly without thinking about it!

Glad that you never plan to go back.  I am with you on that one, whether or not i get on with sly all the time, i can categorically say that it is better than the horseshoe effect!

That's what I use when anyone asks "Why?" to anything, and always have, and it even got me 100% on a psych test!  Another friend also got 100% for answering "Because!"  :*))

I STILL get razzed at work, and probably still will until we get some fresh meat from the college!

First of all, I have to tell you, Reyzor...you look good, man. Like a rock star or something! Dayum!

DJ_Bald, I wouldn't assume the worse just because they don't say anything. Not everyone has malicious thoughts. And trust me, it looks good on you. So they can't all be having negative thoughts when they see you.

Finally, you're not the only one who can rock the bald look, man. You do look good, but it's a look that many, many guys can rock. No one is going to think you're sick...and if they think skinhead when they see you, well they have some trouble. Think about it...did you assume "skinhead" every time you saw a bald guy? I know I never did. I get more people asking me if my tattoos hurt than people assuming I'm a skinhead, trust me. And when someone asks ME why I shaved my head, I just ask them why they haven't yet.
