Considering Shaving

Hi, guys.
So, a bit of backstory... I'm 20 years old and I'm already starting to bald. I have a receding hairline and I'm getting a fair patch on the top of my head, too.
I have fairly long hair at the moment, as I have done since I was about 11 years old, but the last thing I want is to end up with a long fringe being pulled back over a large bald spot into a ponytail!
I've always liked the bald look, but never really considered it being a look I'd ever have.
Any advice?
Oh, and there's one more thing... I'm going to be going military in a few years. I realise I'd have to cut my hair for that anyway, and that's fine, but does anyone happen to know how the British Navy views bald officers?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum Mat!. Look around thru the topics... you'll find a lot of good advice. We even have some current and former military men in the Brotherhood.

Welcome Mat. You'll never really know about the look till you try it. Go for it, it will always grow back. Some of the English brothers here may be able to help with the question of acceptablity in the British Navy. I do know that it is no problem here for officers to be sly.

Our military used to ban shaved heads. They were into no guard clipper cuts but now headshaving is allowed.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.
The problem with the whole "go for it" thing in my mind it that to grow back to it's current length it would take about 2 years at least, by which time I'll be going military. So when I shave it off it's going to be for good.
It's something I'm seriously considering, but I'm kind of worried about the reaction of my friends. Up until about 3 months ago I had a beard... And I mean a proper bushy beard, not just some stubble. When I shaved that off there were a lot of mixed reactions, but mostly it was all positive. Can I expect the same for my hair, or would it be different?

mat: welcome 2 the sly fraternity. glad that ya found us. i say get a quality razor & "do the deed". besides... mother nature is slowly taking your hair away... why not beat her 2 the finish line & EMBRACE your baldness with a slick, smooooth dome. U will have many comments both positive & negative (mostly positive) however... the most important comment of all is yours. so... do what feels right but i promise U that once U "scrape" that dome smooooth... U will enjoy your new look and never look back.

True! It used to be considered defacing govt property

That's interesting... I knew that could be the case with tattoos in visible places, but I didn't know it extended to hair (or lack of it).

I say if you're thinking about it and like the look...
go for it for YOU bro...
Do not do things because of what people reactions might be...life's too short..plus if people didn't try different things we'd all still look like cavemen!?!
Experiment and have fun dude...it's only a haircut!

Well, it's been a few months since I posted here, but I finally got around to going sly today!
I decided to wait a little while until Children in Need came around (British national charity event), and so I raised a load of money in sponsers and shaved my head for it.
Have to admit, I'm loving the look!
I'll get a picture up soon.
