Well, four years ago I was sporting a full head of hair, no very visible receding lines or thinning. I had quite a bit on top, and I was usually sporting a beard as it just grew too damn fast to keep clean. I get in to work one day to see an e-mail from the Staff Sgt. about how he's organizing this event with the Canadian Cancer Society. COPS For Cancer! I had an uncle in the Military who was on his death bed at the time with cancer so I though I'd give it a go. I was surprised at how much people were pledging to have me shave it all off. After a month of collecting pledges I showed up at the event which was held at a local yearly festival for kids and it was a blast. There were 3 City Police, 4 Provincial, and 2 of us Federal. Made for a nice turnout and we raised quite a lot of money.
A year and a half later, I was driving to town to meet some friends on Superbowl Sunday and ran into the Staff Sgt. at the coffee shop. We got to talking and he introduced me to this new recruit with him as the 'Clown with the red afro' that shaved my head with him him for the event. So we got to talking about that and he was telling me how he usually organized it every year but that he was too busy the year before so I told him I'd look into it. A few months later I was sending out the e-mail to everyone and we were doing it again. We only had 3 officers, but we raised almost as much as when we were 9. We coincided it with a BBQ fund raiser for a co-worker who was battling cancer so it was a great turn out.
After the first time I went right back to letting my hair grow, but after the second time last August I kept it shaved for about a week. I'm not Sly 100% of the time, but I'm always encouraging people to shave it all off for charity. I know lots of you are our friendly neighbors to the south so it would be a different charitable organization, but here's the link for the Canadian Cancer Society and there are lots of ideas for fund raisers that I'm always encouraging people to get involved in. If any of you know people in uniformed Law Enforcement let them know about this and I'm always more than happy to talk about it.
