Sly For A Good Cause
« on: May 09, 2008, 12:32:36 AM »
Yesterday while shopping at Costco, I saw a clerk who normally sports a short fringe around a otherwise balding head.  But he finally ended up going sly.  OK that is not too unusual.  But how he got to that point was unusual.  His face and head were colored red and yellow with stripes.  This is the color theme for the "Children's Miracle Network" charity.  So he was trying to get donations for this worthwhile cause.  Of course I gave a donation, especially because of the effort he made to attract attention to the cause.  Before I left the checkstand, I asked him if he was going to keep the sly look.  I told him I had seen him before and thought the sly look would suit him.  He mentioned that he was going to keep it shaved.  So at that point I told him about the HeadBlade and where to get it.  This cashier then thanked me for the information.

So my question for all you is:  Do you know someone who has shaved their head for a good cause?  Or have you done it yourself?  It can be for a fundraiser or to support someone who has cancer.  Tell me your stories!

It was a fundraiser that led me to slyness, Marsh.   Our high school was doing the play "A Few Good Men".   The drama teacher does fantastic productions and insists on realism, so the boys who were playing the Marines were told that before opening night they would need appropriate Marine Corps haircuts.  To support these kids and gain publicity, the director developed the idea to have teachers volunteer to get their heads buzzed/shaved if the students could raise $1500 for the Armed Forces Veterans Childrens Fund.  This fund supplies scholarships for students whose parents were killed in action.  18 teachers volunteered.  As the only Marine on staff and the technical director of the show, I jumped on the bandwagon.  Been sly ever since.  And yes the students did raise the $1500, in fact they raised almost $3000 for the scholarship fund.

I never shave it off for charity but back when I had hair I cut the pony tail off twice for locks of love.

I never shaved my head for a cause but would do it for charity if I had the opportunity back in the day.  Now its a lifestyle

Well, four years ago I was sporting a full head of hair, no very visible receding lines or thinning.  I had quite a bit on top, and I was usually sporting a beard as it just grew too damn fast to keep clean.   I get in to work one day to see an e-mail from the Staff Sgt. about how he's organizing this event with the Canadian Cancer Society.  COPS For Cancer!  I had an uncle in the Military who was on his death bed at the time with cancer so I though I'd give it a go.    I was surprised at how much people were pledging to have me shave it all off.  After a month of collecting pledges I showed up at the event which was held at a local yearly festival for kids and it was a blast.  There were 3 City Police, 4 Provincial, and 2 of us Federal.  Made for a nice turnout and we raised quite a lot of money.

A year and a half later, I was driving to town to meet some friends on Superbowl Sunday and ran into the Staff Sgt. at the coffee shop.  We got to talking and he introduced me to this new recruit with him as the 'Clown with the red afro' that shaved my head with him him for the event.  So we got to talking about that and he was telling me how he usually organized it every year but that he was too busy the year before so I told him I'd look into it.  A few months later I was sending out the e-mail to everyone and we were doing it again.  We only had 3 officers, but we raised almost as much as when we were 9.  We coincided it with a BBQ fund raiser for a co-worker who was battling cancer so it was a great turn out.

After the first time I went right back to letting my hair grow, but after the second time last August I kept it shaved for about a week.  I'm not Sly 100% of the time, but I'm always encouraging people to shave it all off for charity.  I know lots of you are our friendly neighbors to the south so it would be a different charitable organization, but here's the link for the Canadian Cancer Society and there are lots of ideas for fund raisers that I'm always encouraging people to get involved in.  If any of you know people in uniformed Law Enforcement let them know about this and I'm always more than happy to talk about it.
