Any Advice on GPS devices by SLYinKC on 29 Dec, 2007 18:47

Got some cash for Christmas and I think I've decided that I'd like to get one of those new GPS devices for my car. Only problem is... I really don't have a clue in what to look for. I've seen prices starting at a little over $100 and going up. Not sure what the differences are or what some key features to look for. Any advice would be welcome.

Randal McAnly has nice gps system for about 10 bucks.....you just have to turn the pages though.....becareful dont spill your coffee on it....or the Mighty Mississippi might end up looking like the Colorado River.....

hey rick....my brother-in-law's gf got one for CHRISTMAS. she got the garmin navigation one with the pre-programmed map. that thing is awesome. she didn't get the service contract (you know the one where u can talk to a live person)....i think that service is expensive if i'm not mistaken. u can update the maps yearly. i believe bestbuy and circuit city has some good deals. anyways.... good luck with your research and keep us posted on what u decide 2 get.

Randal McAnly has nice gps system for about 10 bucks.....you just have to turn the pages though.....becareful dont spill your coffee on it....or the Mighty Mississippi might end up looking like the Colorado River.....
rick.... u got 2 admit that was pretty funny AND very cost effective, too... only 10 bucks.

? thats the Rednecks gps isnt it??? well that is prolly an upgrade to the Rednecks.....I think the rednecks are still getting directions for the gas station and writing them on the back of the Happy Meal boxes...............

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and love it. Consumer Reports has rated this model very well. My brother-in-law and a friend bought the same model and they're both very pleased. The best price I could find was $400, although my friend found it on the net for a few bucks less.
One the features that made me pick this model was that it was the most inexpensive model that announced (computer voice) the actual street names coming up, as opposed to just just saying "turn in 500 feet". -

I get what you are saying there....cause i was in a vehicle once...and it said turn left at 200 ft.....i hated being the passenger in that car...cause i had to get out and step it off.....lol -

Rick, my old job required me to drive all over most of the eastern seaboard of Australia and the work vehicle was equipped with a NAVMAN GPS unit. I cannot remember the exact model number, but it was under 400 AUD and gave detailed maps. Even has a day and night mode depending on when you are driving.

My dad just bought my mom a Garmin GPS StreetPilot 550c for Christmas. It's really sweet! It has a built in BlueTooth so you can do hands free dialing on your cell phone. It also has an MP3 player. They're selling it on Amazon right now for $309. I've pasted a link below to the listing.

Yes Rick....the car would Ocassionally stop to pick me back up....but i finally I figured out that I would often find a sign on my back ....Portable GPS system..please pick up. I would eventually get another ride.
