I don't know if I told you guys, but about two months ago I enrolled in Barber school. I will be retiring in June and I want to have something to keep me busy a few days a week. I want to do something COMPLETELY different than anything else I have ever done. So for reasons that we can discuss later, this is what I am doing.
Anyway, tonight a really nice young guy gets in my chair. He is in his mid 20's. His hair is chestnut brown and about 6 inches long on top and badly overgrown on the sides. He shows me a photo of a model with a "disconnected" haircut with the top spiked straight up and over. I talked him out of doing the "disconnected" thing and he decided to try a close, high taper.
As I start cutting his hair he confesses that the reason he is making the big change is that he thinks it might disguise his rapidly receding hairline. When I pick up his bangs and begin to cut the top of his head it is VERY apparent that he cannot pull off a long spiked top! He said; "Wow; it has been so long since I had a haircut I didn't know that it had gotten this bad". I would rather just shave it off but my family was horrified when I even mentioned it to them."
I told him about this site. I told him about the 30 day rule. I told him that I was sure that he would look great shaved slick. But I also told him that he was a long way from "having" to shave and that we could try a lot of shorter hairstyles over the next few months that would let him keep his hair for a while and have some fun with it. In the end, we cut his hair fairly short and put some fiber pomade in it. He was thrilled. He said; "This is going to be fun. I am not afraid of going shorter and eventually even shaving it slick". "What did you say that website was?" He gave me the biggest tip I have ever gotten and wanted to know exactly what nights I work.
This is the reason I wanted to try to become a barber in my "Old Age". What other job can you have where you meet interesting people and within 20 minutes do something for them that makes them feel so much better about themselves?
I am pretty sure that "Zachary" is going to become a member of this board in the very near future!
Nice story.
Are you learning to give head shaves as well?
Great story!
Hope we see him here.
You sound so nice,i went to the barber to see one last time if he can pull something good with my thining hair
And he done an excellent job and it looks so good,he trimmed the thining really short and shaved the sides even shorter, and also he used this tool to even my hairline and at the end it looked really good like i just have some.kind of a buzzcut.
Recruiting again, eh, Semi Sly!

Actually, I have given quite a few head shaves already - but they have us do them with the Andis electric shaver. I will, however, learn to to face shaves with a straight razor. Then, later, if and when I have a willing "victim" I will try a straight razor head shave.
Great story. I'm not sure I'd have enough confidence to give someone a head shave. I'd love to do it, but I think I'd be too worried about cutting them
