First Shave

• Hi all. I'd been toying with the idea of shaving my head for a while now so decided to do it! To my surprise there were pretty big red patches on my scalp, really didn't look good at all. Any advice as to how to stop this happening? I thought the shaved look was good but I've grown it back a bit as that really didn't look good!

  I may be wrong, but you may have a case of sebhorric dermatitis. The cheapest way to cure that is to try the thirty day rule when you shave every day for 30 days. If it doesn't clear up, you may have to see a dermatologist. Good luck and keep us posted!

• I agree with Sir Harry Hawkerz. It definitely looks like a bad case of seb derm.  The good thing is shaving has helped people including me get over seb derm.  Keep shaving and it should progressively get better.  You did the right thing by shaving your head. After you shave, put a good moisturizer on like pure aloe vera gel. If it just so happens to not get better, see a doctor like Sir Harry said.

• I can't really opine on what's behind the redness, but I do hope you're able to do something about it.  Smooth does look good on you from the front, so hopefully Harry and AJ are right in their diagnosis.

• I experience the same thing, and it's not caused by shaving. I only get the red spots if I let my hair grow for longer than 3 weeks. My dermatologist once told me it's an autoimmune disorder, causing the skin to plaque up, become irritated, and in some cases results in alopecia areata. Your case is pretty mild.
  
  The red spots will peel off and fade in 5-10 days.

• Try 1% hydrocortisone cream.  You can get it at any local drug store for a few bucks.  Put it on twice a day and see if it clears up in a few days.  I get similar spots when I grow out some facial hair and hydrocortisone cream does the trick.

• Thanks for all the advice and positive words guys. It took a lot of bravery to shave so it's good to hear that it looks OK! I'll get some aloe vera gel and hydrocortisone cream and give it another go!
