I'm currently on holiday in San Francisco with my partner, really enjoying the place. I've noticed though that there seems to be a high percentage of guys sporting the "bald on top, long ponytail at the back" look. Each to their own, but it's not a good look! Wonder if it's a hippy thing? Hmmm?

Our family was recently on vacation in Maine, and my wife and I saw this same look often enough that it came up in conversation -- only it was often with white or gray/white hair. I agree: to each their own, but not a good look in my opinion.

"If I can't have it on top, I'll have it in back"
Yeah. Doesn't work.
I vastly prefer "If I can't have it on top, I'll have it on my face."

Loving San Francisco, 2nd visit, came four years ago. Apart from the dodgy "baldietails" as we have named them, there are so many homeless people with apparent mental health issues begging on the streets sadly. Don't remember seeing any 4 years ago.

My mother lived across the bay in Oakland from 1982-2004. When I would visit her, we would occasionally take the trip across to San Francisco to visit some of the attractions. People for the most part were friendly, but most people who live outside of San Francisco in neighboring cities around the bay seem to dislike everything about the city up to and including their sports teams. As far as the bald on top/ponytail thing, I've seen quite a few of those down in Louisiana (mostly truck drivers). I agree with Leigh that it's sad, but if the wearer is happy, well, to each his own.

SF is a dirty city with a gov't that makes some really odd decisions (sadly, the same goes for my old hometown, Oakland).
Quality of life issues are why we left the Bay Area 13 years ago.

A lot of San Francisco is lovely and quirky, the people a friendly and laid back (maaan!) Though I wasn't so impressed at the hour long hobbo kick off in the early hours this morning, could hear the swearing & shouting and we are on the 7th floor! Not even staying in a "rough" area..slap bang next to China town in the middle of the fashion district.
As for the "baldietails"...Well it's business at the top, party at the back!

This could be the bald man's mullet

I don't care for the look either....but...
SlyBear, I have used your statement before... "If I can't grow it on top, I'll grow it on my face". When I was trying to sell my wife on liking my full beard instead of my goatee, I told her that it's not like I can change my hairstyle. (Well, I could grow the power doughnut, but who wants to go there?)

I live in San Francisco (since 2007) and I can't think of one time I have seen a baldie-tail.
As for the comment about the city being dirty - ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This city is far from being dirty.
Crazy homeless people - yea there had been a large uptick in this population in recent years. Probably 2 factors: the economy probably made some boarderline people end up homeless without care and Nevada has been dumping thier homless/mentally ill in San Francisco (hence the recent law suit to stop the practice).
I love my City. I have lived many places: New jersey, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Atlanta and by far San Francisco has been the best experience.

Have spent many an evening watching the sun go down from the Top of the Mark or the Cliff House. Nice town.

I just made note that Mario Battaglia on The Chew has the baldie-tail style as well.

I was in San Francisco on vacation many years ago. Luckily, the girl I was dating at the time had been there often for business so she knew her way around to the places that the locals frequented.
I loved the city and had a great time while there. It was 4th of July weekend and I can still remember the both of us freezing on the boat ride we took to watch fireworks.
