Really thinking about it...
« on: September 03, 2013, 06:03:40 PM »
Hey, guys! This is my first post around here.

Latelly I've been thinking about getting a buzz cut at first, to get the feel of it, but I'm not really sure if it'll look good on me since I'm pretty skinny(5'10'' 147lbs), I'm mostly worried about my thin neck and head shape. I think it might end up looking weird.

Here are some pics

I started out buzzing it too. Just remember, 30 day rule.

It does not look like you are naturally going bald. I'm not either.

Go for a #4 clipper on top. Tapered on the sides.  Then every so often go down a size.  Before you know it, You'll have a #1 all over ... at which point you need to buzz your head every week.  You'll want to have your own clippers.

Then one day, just leave the guard off and buzz as tightly as you can.  You'll have a good idea of what you'll look like when you get the razor out.  But the best FEEL will be when you finally shave your head.

I'm sure it would be pretty radical to just shave it right off.  But work it down systematically and you'll be SLY soon enough.

I think you will be just fine. However, if I had that much hair I'd keep it. Just my opinion.

Sly looks great with the beard you have. Go for a very buzz first and see how you feel. I sometimes grow out to a very short buzz but really enjoy the shave and the smooth bare head afterward, it just feels great.

This. That's a good head of hair you have there.

That's like using a wheelchair for the fun of it!

You'll look great with your head shaved... I say if you've got the itch, you're not going to be happy until you shave it smooth. But you've got to try it for 30 days to give it a fair shake.

A short buzz for the summer wouldn't hurt.....IMHO, you've got the head and the face to wear any hair style you want to (including bald). You could give the buzz or bald a try and if neither is what you had hoped it would be, you can always grow a great head of hair back. Good luck!

I don't think I had that much hair in my "heyday!!"  ;D

I agree that probably a longer buzz cut at first (as MrZed says #4 with tapered sides) would be a great start and then go shorter if you like it. I went with #2 all over for a long time, my body shape is similar to yours. I went that way for a long time, cutting it every month or so until it got to the point I needed to cut it shorter and shorter. Finally out came the razor and the commencement of the 30-Day Rule.

A great advantage is, hey, you don'ty like it, grow it back. But try the buzz on for 30 days, see how you feel. That will give you time to adjust to the new, sharp look and give others time to 'see' the new you!  :)

And welcome to the forum! Hope to see you around and post pics of your fancy new buzz cut!

I think it helps when we encourage guys who want to try sly even with much hair growing. They came here for advice on being sly. I think the poster would enjoy trying it and even if he doesn't keep it sly or buzzed his visit here was helpful. One day he may be back or recommend someone else.

When I had my first buzz cut my hair was of similar length to yours, albeit, I was about 15/16 at the time.
I was a tad nervous/scared when the barber switched on the clippers, but began to "man-up" as the boyish hair began to hit the floor bit by bit.

I ended up with a #4 length on top and tapered #3 back and sides. I looked radically different, but I began to get used to the shorter hair. Eventually ended up with a #1 shortly thereafter & kept it that way for a good while before having my head shaved. Love it now & wish I had had my head shaved a lot sooner than I did.

If I were you, I would get a very short buzz to see how you like it then when you are ready, have your head shaved.

All the best,

Bill

What 'sealed' it for me, as I remember back, was the summer vacation when I took off the guard and just buzzed as short as possible.  It looked bald, but was not.  I could see what it would look like.  Really liked it.

Yes, hair grows back pretty quickly, so if you don't like it, you can revert .... but do give it the 30 days.

You've got great hair, I say enjoy it. Maybe go shorter if you want a different cut. At the end of the day if you do buzz it down, and I remember I had a shaved head a few times when I had hair, it grows back! well, mine used to grow back......

If you take it all off, it will be a shock so go shorter gradually and see whether you like it. I'd be very happy if I had your hair!

You're in an enviable position - can't lose, either way!  You've got great hair, reminiscent of my former glorious mane, but would look totally fine buzzed or shaved down.  Doesn't hurt to try it out for a bit, just to see what it's like.  In retrospect, kind of wish I'd tried it (briefly) before I started losing it, so I'd know what was coming...

Still, if it were ME, long-term I'd enjoy the hair.  That's a great gift you've got there, and one that a LOT of guys would love to have!
