Lots of questions

Well, I finally decided to post.

I've been lurking this forum for a while after being referred from hairlosstalk. I've been suffering from aggressive male pattern baldness for three years and I'm not fooling anyone anymore. I've decided to shave it. However, I have a family reunion in 2.5 weeks. I better start as soon as possible so I can let it grow back if for some reason I look really weird (I doubt I will).

Some questions:
1. What should I have my barber use to trim my hair so I can properly shave it? 1 guard all over? No guard?
2. Does anyone use a sunless tanner on the bald head? Does it work? I don't want to look weird at first with the rest of my body being fairly tan and my head being white.

I'll post more when I think of them.

First off bro, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!

Tell your barber to use no guard.  This will help you know right away if your head looks "weird" without shaving it.  But, I'm sure it won't.  Second of all, it will make it easier for you to go home and shave it all off.

As for the sunless tanner, there hasn't been much success with them here.  The tanner gets scraped off when you shave next.

Welcome Busta, glad you decided to join us.  Like the others have said, no guard, and perhaps you can even find a barber who would shave it for your right then and there.  There is only about a 2 day growth difference between sly and no guard so it wouldn't be that big a thing.  Don't worry about how it will look, it will look great and you'll be glad you did it.  O0

Hey, Busta,  Glad you're here.  I'd just go with the no guard also.  That's what I did, only I did it myself with a pair of clippers at home.  I also used a self tanner.  I got one at Wal Mart by Nuetrogena that worked alright.  It also had and SPF 15 to help with the sun.

My advice is just go for it and all the details will just work themselves out! 8)

Welcome Busta.  Glad you decided to post up.  Yeah, like the others have said, go with no guard which will get it as close as possible without being too low.  This way you can see what it may look like totally sly and you can decide if you want to go all the way.  If not it shouldn't take too long to grow back.  Make sure you get a good quality razor or just let the barber do it right there like Paul suggested.  Good luck and keep us posted.  O0

Welcome Busta!!!  The guys have said it well.  No guard.  That will give you some indication on how things will look, but it really makes the first shave easier.  Go for it and post some pics for us.

Hey Busta.  Welcome.  When I did it, my barber used a 0A clipper on me.  It was really close.  Two days later I shaved the rest.  Have never looked back and still getting compliments 3 weeks later.

- Razor (Headblade? Gillette Fusion? Shick Extreme III?)
- Exfoliant (Tendskin? HeadShed?)
- Shave Cream (heard good things about Edge Active Care Advanced Shave Cream, Deep Hydrating For Dry Skin)
- After-shave lotion (Headlube? Massage oil? Baby oil? Cocoa butter? Witch hazel?)

I'd like to be able to use products I can run to a drugstore and get, as I'm planning to shave on Sunday.
