I bought an electric guitar today, a Epiphone SG Special II. I am a teacher and have summers off, so I am hoping to teach myself to play this summer. However, I don't know how to read music, but had some success with tabs tonight on Rolling Stones "Satisfaction".
Anyone else play guitar?

Hey it can be done. I taught myself piano. Grabbed some old books lying around the house, taught myself what all the squiggly lines mean and went from there. Good luck.

The best thing to remember about reading guitar tab is this: It's upsidedown. That's really all you need to remember. After that it's pretty much self explanatory. Good luck!

Huh? I am a guitar noob. What do you mean upsidedown. My wife thinks I should learn to read music. I looked at it today and it just confused me. The nice thing about playing the tabs was some early success with a couple riffs. practice, practice, practice.

If you go to youtube you can find some videos that show how to play some pretty popular songs. Just search for "guitar lessons" and you should come up with some stuff. They break down the chord progressions and make it really easy to follow. The great part is that you can hear it as it's played and compare the results you're getting to those.

Yeah, I've got a Taylor 414CE and I'm trying to teach myself to play but my instructor can't play any better than I can!

You know bro, I can't fire myself, I'm too inexpensive!

But maybe lessons would be a good idea!

GBorn, how about a little help from one of the music teachers at school?

I have always wanted to learn, but cant find anyone who could teach me. Although, now that I do have a job in a kitchen, and make decent pay, I am thinking of buying one, and maybe taking lessons.

I have my first lesson on Wednesday night. I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully, I can pick it up fairly quickly and the learning curve isn't to much. The style I hope to someday play is ROCK...along the lines of Zakk Wylde.

The past few days I been picking her brain about music theory.
