Has anyone tried having the setting of the merkur on 6? I can't see many people using that setting tbh, unless they want just a skull.

I've looked everywhere and asked family but just can't find my old DE razors. I guess I'll have to send off and buy a new Merkur or a Mick Jagger. Any recommendations?
Here's a tip that I've used for years...when I pack light for a short trip instead of taking my shave soap 'n' mug, I just throw in my shave brush. I can always whip up some lather with bath soap.

I have. I've done it a few times when I've had a few days of growth. However, I only did it for the first pass. After that I set it to a 2 or 3 and completed the rest of my shave as usual.

I only have experience with the Merku Futur. I like it because it has six settings to adjust the aggressiveness. It is on the heavier side of the scale and does cost more than other razors. I only purchased it because I had some birthday money to spend.
I do know of others that have bought the Edwin Jager and love it. I Warhawk and MikeKoz13 have different razors than I do so maybe he'll chime in on this one.

I have the Edwin Jagger (Mick's brother) DE89L. It was about $36 at LeesRazors.com
It's a beautiful razor, top quality and I love it. I am curious about other DE razors though... I actually have that Merkur Futur in my sights.

Used the DE at the sink on both my face and head today:
Wash: Pear's Transparent soap
Exfoliate: HeadShed
Pre-shave oil: Art of Shaving unscented
Cream: Art of Shaving unscented
Razor / Blade: Merkur with an Astra blade
Rinse: Warm / cold water
After-shave: Art of Shaving balm unscented
Result: BBS head and face
I had a sample package called "The Perfect Shave" from The Art of Shaving. The shaving cream gives a nice lather and smooth shave, but clogs the razor, so rinsing it takes a lot longer.

I accidentally tried the Futur on setting #6 today. I was shaving at setting #2 but I noticed that it was getting clogged. So, I opened it up to setting #6 to hopefully let more water in it to clean it out. I unknowingly forgot to set it back to setting #2 and continued to shave. Once I realized it was on setting #6 I figure I would finish out the shave on that setting - Bad idea! I got a few more nicks than I suspect I would have had I kept it on setting #2. For where I am in my DE headshaving adventures setting #6 setting isn't for me.
On to today's SOTD stats...
Head (at sink)
Razor: Merkur Future (setting #2/#6)
Blade: Wilkinson Sword
Brush: Walmart cheap-o brush (boar hair)
Soap: HeadSlick with a few drops of Shave Secret whipped in to the lather
Shave: Mostly ATG
Aftershave: Witch Hazel
No face shave today.
I don't know that the HeadSlick is the best soap for me to use with a DE. I fell a bit of irritation/razor burn on my head. Though, some of that could have been from accidentally leaving the Merkur Futur on #6 for a bit (as mentioned above).

Doug, while I understand that your adventure with the '6' setting was not the best, it did remind me to wait awhile before going up a notch or two on my Future. You experience is very valuable to all! Thanks for posting it up!

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the #6 setting isn't for the faint of heart or for those who faint at the sight of blood!
I'd recommend sticking with a #1 or #2 setting for a while to get comfortable with the weight of razor and to hone your technique with it.
How have your shaves been with it so far?

Thanks. It wasn't too awful but still a pain to deal with afterwards.

@ Doug - My shaves? So far they have been good. I've had the Futur set on 1, just to get the technique down, and to get used to the weight of the razor. The first was DFS level, and the second shave was BBS level. The only difference between the two shaves was the soap used. Once I feel comfortable with the technique, I'll move up to a 2. Also, it will be awhile before I use the DE on my dome.

What are these settings you talk about? My Merkur doesn't adjust.
