I use gas simply because it's convenient. But ya'll are right; it's hard to beat the flavor of charcoal (or smell for that matter)!
I have used both, but switched to a wood pellet Traeger grill about 12 years ago, and would never go back,
As soon as I saw Bear's pics, I went to look at the price of buying a big green egg, it's just what I'm after... but man are they pricey over here!!

They ain't exactly a "Blue Light Special" here either! Well worth it, but still pricey. On the other hand, when I've tried a Weber Kettle at rental houses when we go to the NC mountains near Highlands I've had lousy results, the metal is so thin there's no heat retention so there are hot spots, cold spots--particularly bad if you like to indirect or smoke cooking.

I pretty much always cook indirectly, gives the best flavour and tenderness, it's why the ceramic is such a good idea. Also it's sad to hear about the Weber, I have such good memories of them as a kid, but thinking about it, it really was pretty thin... now cast iron would be pretty cool, but prone to cracking i guess.
Just to give an idea, even the small one is $1000. I think the Mrs would shoot me if I spent that much on a grill.
I always enjoy our discussions about grilling and any type of cooking because I absolutely enjoy SlyBear's Food Porn Pics. Now... I am hungry.

I wonder if he`s got some kinda special apron and grilling hat when he`s workin that green egg . . . .
No apron and no hat, aarrggh -- but I do have a set of welder's gloves that I wear. That sucker can get hot!
Charcoal all the way. Gas is for when the lights go out.

Straight up.... Gotta roll with the Charcoal.... Bought a gas grill a few years back but took everything out and converted it... Didn't like the gas grill although they are good when grilling steaks... Still want to get one just for when the Lights Go Out... Gotta get one of those Green Eggs though....
