Everyone seems to call it something different. My mom called it a toboggan, I called it a beanie or just a winter cap.
I am curious as to whether it's regional, generational or just something different people simply have different names for.
What do you call it, and why?

I always called it a Cap. Hat or Knit Hat. I'm from Eastern PA, and moved to Central PA. They have a lot of Pennsylvania Dutch influence and they have different names for things and ways of talking. It's really interesting to me how diverse language can be.

Well there are different terms for different styles. The old fashioned ones like grandma made are stocking caps or knit caps. The normal ones are beanies. Then skullys are 2 different things depending on who you talk to, one is the beanie with no brim and the other is a spandex style that is super warm.
