Post by: Sly Red on June 02, 2008, 06:45:40 AM
Since many of you guys have pics with sunglasses on this must be a fav Sly accessory.  What are your favorites of the moment.  Whether you're going for hip or menacing they're the perfect finish for a Sly bald look.

I wear Von Zipper Papa G loc style sunglasses.Shiny black and inspired by the cholo shades of mid 80's Los Angeles chicano scene.

the reason i buy dirt-cheap sunglasses is that every year i manage to break two or three pairs!! :/O

Had designer type in the past and managed to break them after about a week.  i seem to tread on them a lot, drive over them, sit on them, loose them.. you name it, I dun it! :(

Yup me too.

But I still buy the expensive ones.  I just hate the optics on the cheap ones.

However the mid priced ones at www.mec.ca or rei.com or the Ryders brand  are pretty good.

Yeah, they are rather expensive, but hell, I had glasses all my life and just recently went to contacts so I indulged and treated myself since I've always wanted a nice pair of shades without needing to worry about prescriptions.

Gotta give it to the Oakleys!  My favorite pair are the "Juliets".

Mine look just like this picture I stole: (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi27.tinypic.com%2Fzurvjc.jpg&hash=329341ebbebaac76411cf71bb27a05731dd4b72b)  ::)

I've always been a big fan of Oakleys and a pair will usually last me about 3-5 years... I just take very good care of them.

The Oakleys are really cool.  I've always like their optics, but had bad luck with their plastic frames.  Yours are metal, right?  Just ordered a pair of Von Zipper Shams.  Hope I'll like them.  Like yourself, I usually buy nice sunglasses and keep them for years.  I'm getting ready to sell off some of my old ones on eBay.  The oldest ones I've had since 1988.

I ordered a dozen from X-Loop USA. I got steered onto these by Madturk. They are decent shades, total out to about $3.50 a pair. I lose 'em and break 'em so I'd rather trash a pair of $3.50 shades than a pair of hundred dollar Gargoyles. I have  couple of nice pairs of Gargoyles and a pair of RayBan Aviators with cable temples that I wear f I'm just going out somewhere but if the possibility of tossing a football or shooting a few hoops exists I'm wearing the Loops.

Not a dumb question at all. The glasses are the same style but will have a mix of frame colors and lens tints including some that are mirrored. They also sell a package that includes 12 different styles but I figured if I bought one of those they would all be the styles that everybody hates.

This thread inspired me to get another pair. The shades in my avatar are my prescription sunglasses (which I love). My only other pair is a pair of Oakley M Blades. They're a few years old, but they're still in mint condition (you tend to take good care of something that costs a little more). So, I was cruising around our local Kohl's and found a pair of "Relic" brand glasses. Reg. $30, on sale for $15. They're lightweight, durable, and if something happens to them, no sweat.

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs295.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fmm136%2Fschrodad%2F%3Faction-view%26amp%3Bcurrent%3DCIMG5141-1.jpg%26amp%3Bt%3D1212932542826&hash=6e12c7465bc43e3c21efe0d1c926eca162a6f25b)

I have two pairs: one for my car, one for the motorcycle. They're both Walgreen specials that are designed to fit over regular glasses. That way, I can actually still see while I'm driving. I've always thought that was a good idea.

Thanks man! It's funny, I went to get those with a friend of mine. He's a real "pretty boy", in that he's a sharp dresser, full head of long hair, and very in touch with current style and trends (I believe metrosexual is the term). He kept trying to convince me to get some Dior or Gucci sunglasses. I was like, "Cmon bro, do I really look like that type. Dior sunglasses don't exactly scream badass mofo." What I meant by that is that for me personally, being sly gives my look a sort of badass edge. Designer sunglasses don't exactly mesh with that whole deal. It might work for some, but just not for me. He couldn't understand my point, but oh well.

Anyway, thanks for the comment xnewyawka!

I always used to go with cheapo as I usually lose or break them.  A couple of years ago I went against the grain and bought a pair of Dirty Dogs.
http://www.dirtydog.biz/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=113
And they even do a model that matches my login name - how cool?

These are now getting a bit scratched but I don't like the trend of large lenses prevalent at the moment.

I'm cool ,shades or not Tyro just by the fact that I'm SLY!!!

Why Prada, Oakley? Because I don't want to have to replace my sunglasses 2 or 3 times a year because I bought an inferior product like the $12 shades at the local 7-11. Living in California, I have to wear my shades every single day. I want them to be comfortable, stylish and provide the UV protection I need. I also want them to last longer than a month. Oakleys and Pradas come with a guarentee that the 7-11 shades can't offer. So I'll pay a bit more for them because I know they'll last the entire year or more.

Red, great shades Bro!!! Get your Dirty Dogs yet?

I've got a ginormous head and have trouble finding sunglasses that don't squeeze the living bejesus out of me! :)  So, I found a couple pairs of $12.99 sunglasses at Sunglasses Hut..they say 49 Lynx and Made in China :)  High quality right there baby! :)  Anyhow they are wraparound style so they stretch a little and don't squeeze...very comfortable and affordable..I think they look pretty cool...here is a pic...if I had more money, I'd probably check out some www.fatheadz.com sunglasses.  In fact my cheapos are very similar looking to this fatheadz style...I figure I either lose or break my sunglasses all the time, so unless I happen to have a ton of extra money and the expensive kind fit my head perfectly, then I'll stick to the cheapos... :)  Sometimes Surf Shops have good looking cheap sunglasses too.....and grocery stores..Ukrops in particularl...

Are there any good prescription sunglasses that can accommodate my no line bifocals?  Do any of you have success or failures to share?

Why Prada, Oakley? Because I don't want to have to replace my sunglasses 2 or 3 times a year because I bought an inferior product like the $12 shades at the local 7-11. Living in California, I have to wear my shades every single day. I want them to be comfortable, stylish and provide the UV protection I need. I also want them to last longer than a month. Oakleys and Pradas come with a guarentee that the 7-11 shades can't offer. So I'll pay a bit more for them because I know they'll last the entire year or more.

That's a very good point.  Besides the better optics and quality of  brand name glasses you're also guaranteed UV protection.

Cheapos from China may not protect from UV even if they have a little UV sticker on them.  In fact they cause your eyes to dilate and let MORE UV rays in !!   :o

Before I got contacts I wore a pair of Silhouette prescription sunglasses (http://www.silhouette.com/) and they were no-line bifocals. I had great success with them. They are extremely lightweight and very comfortable.

fr8train I am of the same belief.

Paying a premium price for a premium product that last longer and provide better protection is well worth it.

Hey Red,
Oakley Flak Jackets (polorized) are what I wear on a daily (in my pic) though my girlfriend found me a great pair of Pradas that I might pick up next week.

http://www.abs-sunglasses.com/Shades/ProductImages/23/PR_SPR_60F_1BO-1A1_01.jpg

I've posted a new avatar pic with my Prada shades on.  Very much like the shape of the ones in your link, but with wider temple pieces.  I'd forgotten how cool they are  8)

Prada, Oakley? Why do you need such expensive sunglasses? You can't buy coolness. Drug store store shades are just as good. Have the same UV ray protection. I rarely wear sunglasses. I'm no movie star and definitlely have nothing to hide from.

Sly Buckeye Tyro-Agent Provacateur?

I think not. He just likes to look at both sides of the coin, No problem in that.

Tyro you are alright in my book. Nice! High Five!

Great find X. But I saw nothing about any guarantee. That is my biggest reason for purchasing the Sunglasses that I do. See if I have to wear them everyday, which I do, they come on and off my head many times a day and if they break I want to know that I can get them replaced without having to spend anymore money on them. O:O As well, I have found that the Sunglasses that I purchase last longer (under the conditions that I wear them) than any others. O0

But it is very informative with regard to the UV rating.

Again, good find. Thanks. O0

I agree with you; I never buy the really cheap ones -- but some people do.  People who tend to lose their glasses frequently (with me it's umbrellas).  So it's good to know that the UV protection is there, at least.

ok i don't "loose" many things, let alone a good expensive pair of sunglasses!!!!!   By the way it's lose. u lose things. not loose things. if u loose things that means they don't fit so tight anymore. this loose vs. lose thing has become a bad epidemic......i see more people loosing things where they probably are really losing things. maybe thats y so many things remain un-foundededed

Got my sunglasses (Relics) on sale for $15.99 (regularly $30) at JC Penney... holding up just fine almost 2 months later. No guarantee needed here, if they break I pick up another pair... maybe the same style, maybe something different.

I can get at least 10 pair of these bad boys for the cost of one pair of the name brand ones.

That said, I am very tempted to buy the Oakly Nanowire 3.0 :)

I like Bolle sunglasses. Retail is about $99 if you go to one of those overpriced mall stores. You can get them from eBay or Amazon for about $40-$50 new.

I have real glasses, and I don't feel the need to buy prescription sunglasses. I just squint. And move taller people to block the sun from my eyes.

The greatest sunglasses, as for the way they fit my face, and optical clarity, that I've ever run across personally, are Maui Jim Kahunas. It was like they made a pair of sunglasses just for my face  :@`

If you want ROCK STAR look up Chrome Hearts on line! (sick, but they kick you in the wallet!)

I found some sunglasses that are designed to fit over prescription lenses. I love them. I bought a set for my bike and a set for my car.

At the momeent I wear a pair of Oakley Whiskers. But I think they are too small.
Maybe I will switch to Von Zipper Papa G Black Gloss. They look really cool.
Thank you all for the tips!

Maui Jim Typhoons, they stay on and the lenses are very comfortable in bright sun on the water. They are exspensive but I've also found the company to be very reaistic about repair prices.

I'm still rockin' the Von Zipper Shams that I'm wearing in my avatar pic.  I think they suit the shape of my face perfectly.  They're my favorite sunglasses by far and I have about ten pair.

www.zennioptical.com makes sunglasses (and other glasses) at a very reasonable price. With or without a prescription.  I've been very pleased with their products.
