Title: Movember foolishness
Post by: Christian S on October 30, 2013, 01:17:19 PM
I've been excited all year for Movember at work, but unfortunately they require us to shave so we can start from scratch on 11/1. I don't want to waste all the hard work I've put in so it looks like I'll be doing it on my own. I am pretty upset that I can't participate at work, but I am not wasting my hard work.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't either.

Dunno if it'll make you feel better but it's a standard requirement of Movember, not just what your work is saying, Because of the sponsoring it's about starting as a blank canvas and seeing what you can come up with, often in fun competition with others in the name of the event.

It is a bummer for the beardies tho!

Wow.. I would have to at least be able to keep a goatee.  I can't have a totally smooth face.. I wouldn't recognize myself!!

I had an ad  in my email from "The Art of Shaving" to come in for mustache trims, and they will donate the proceeds to raise funds and awareness to help combat prostate and testicular cancer.  I am all far the donation, but I thought the point was to not trim for the month?  And I never knew about starting from zero on Nov 1.

Oh, well, had the moustache for almost 40 years. It's not coming off now.

Had the bald head for almost 2 years, it's not coming ON now.  :)

Well, when you stop and think about it, it does kind of defeat the purpose if everyone isn't starting off at the same point.  I've never actually met anyone who actually participated in this.

It is huge in the UK. I think also you can only have a moustache no beard.

Yeah in the UK it's no beard and start from scratch on the tash!

I've tried clean shaven but can't get adjusted to the look. Probably should try a 30 day rule!

I tried it for about three months once and just could not get used to it.

You know, there are people out there (or so I am told) that would think it quite odd that a group of men who have no problem shaving their heads can't bring themselves to shave their faces.  Just sayin'.

It is big in Australia where it all started about 10 years ago.  Even at the gym today on 1 November two of the female instructors had huge fake moustaches encouraging their male counterparts to get involved.

As someone who has had prostate cancer and a heart attack I am all for men taking their health seriously and talking about it - not to mention the funds raised for research.

Despite all that I am not about to shave off my beard of 47+ years just to take part!!

Maybe I just have been under a rock for the last several years, but I had not heard of this until this thread.

There is no publicity or mention of it in my area.

I would at some point love to get involved in Movember, but I couldn't go clean shaven to do it. I haven't been clean shaven for about two years (unless you count very short, trimmed stubble as clean shaven) and i'm not going to be any time soon.

I don't worry about shaving my beard I just think I look pretty minging without and choose not to, luckily the length it is within a couple of days I have stubble and it's back within a week

If the women decide not to shave their legs, I don't want to see it (not even pictures)!!   !*u%e !*u%e

Sounds like it runs two months, not just one.

I'm doing Movember this year.  Just not sure what style I'll go for (meaning a month of a shaggy mess most likely!)

If anyone wants to watch my slow progress I'm at http://ex.movember.com/mospace/7908865

I've heard of both but mainly hear it referred to as "No Shave November".  Maybe I'm dense but I thought the Mo in "Movember" had something to do with mowing the hair at the end, but it probably stands for mustache.  Mustaches aren't very popular at least where I am so I guess that's why it is referred to with the more beard-friendly "No Shave November" name.  I guess it's a nice idea so that people can pretend to be male for a month out of the year  >:D  :D

@Mike re shaved legs.  Well, since I'm not into women, I don't care if they shave their legs or not.  I'll say, from a gut level, that I think of men as having hairy bodies and women not (yes, that's an often inaccurate generalization), so my mind is fixed on that.  Still, if I were a woman, I probably wouldn't want to go thru the grooming routine (make-up, shaving).  It also depends on how hairy the area is to begin with.  I already stated that men with shaved bodies were turn-offs for me (not bad, just not attractive to me), but I got trounced for being judgemental!

I'm pretty sure that no shave November and Movember are not the same thing, despite both bring in November.

For me it's really difficult to not be able to shave properly for a month, as I REALLY enjoy shaving, but I figure it's a small thing compared to raising money to help in the fight against prostate and testicular cancer.

I thought it was merely a condition that I have.

Yes, I have been told by a few people that my head is on upside down.

I like to think that my hair just slipped down a bit.
