Title: 30 Days In and Loving It!
Post by: mattpalmer27 on January 30, 2013, 03:41:19 PM
My wife got me the HeadBlade for Christmas and by the 27th, I was bald!

I'm loving it so far, just dealing with the oh-so-fun red bumps that so many other beginners deal with.  I think I put too much pressure on the back of my head and neck.  Not sure if its razor burn or folliculitis or something else. I bought some Witch Hazel and have been using it for two days.  Hydrocortisone 1% seemed to help the first time I used it, but not so much the second time.  I'm hoping it clears up soon...it's driving me nuts!

Anyway, here's the first picture I took after shaving my head the first time, complete with my 18 month old photobombing from her carseat!

The sly look works good for you. Try ice and rub it on your head I found it helps a lot which I used it the first time I shave and I have had no irritation at all O0

Welcome Matt, looks great.

I don't think you'll need it, but suggest you make the commitment to the 30-day challenge which is mentioned elsewhere on the site. If you need it posted here, leave a message and I'll add it in.

You look really comfortable.

As it should be.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm done with the 30 Day Challenge!  I'm 35 or 36 days in now!

I'm definitely sticking with it!  Just ready to figure out what works best for me for avoiding the irritation.

I read about that somewhere on here the other day when these bumps first showed up.  I haven't shaved since then thinking if it was razor burn that I didn't want to irritate anymore than it already was.  I'm going to try it next time I shave.

What razor did you use?

You might also try Shave Secret oil ... massage a few drops onto your scalp before putting on the shave cream/lotion (I also let a drop of oil slide down my razor cartridge).

The Shave Secret has helped several fellows I know who were dealing with the red bumps. I got it at Wal-Mart - about $3.50 for a 5/8 oz bottle which lasts me several months. It's on a cardboard backer and usually towards the top of the shelf unit near the blades and such.

Man, I had to go get trash bags so I slipped through the shaving section...no Shave Secret Oil.  All they had was the price tag and an empty row above it.

What razor did you use?

I used the Headblade Sport with the factory blade on it first.  I did well with it until it got dull.  That was the first time I got razor burn bad.

Then I started using a Gillette Fusion.  The last time I shaved was the 3rd time I used that blade, and I broke out bad.

I recently found some Headblade HB3s at Walgreens and bought them.  I'm going to give those a shot next.  I'm also going to not shave against the grain on the back of head!

To everybody else that has posted, I appreciate your kind and welcoming words!

Welcome aboard and for the sake of us fellow novices let us know how the blades work out.

Also your wife and you have great taste in glasses -- I need to pick out a new pair soon and you both look fantastic in your specs!

Welcome aboard, Matt! First off, nice family! Secondly, may I suggest getting Bump Stopper or Bump Patrol, both are sold in the shaving aisle at WalMart or you can check your local drugstore. Bump Patrol is what I use more; it comes in a blue bottle. Most of my breakouts clear up in 48-72 hours since using. Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions! Oh, by the way, the beard looks great with the shaved head!

Thanks!! She would disagree (that she looks fantastic in glasses)!  In fact, she just ordered contacts again.  We order our glasses online pretty cheap from http://www.zennioptical.com.  They have great prices, take your script even if it's over a year old, and take about a week and a half or two to come in from the time you place the order.

The main negative is not being able to try the glasses on first to see how they'll look/fit/feel before you buy them. We've each bought two pairs from there and have been pretty well satisfied both times.  The best thing is to go into a glasses retailer like EyeMasters or LensCrafters, try on different styles, and then see what Zenni has in a similar style.

Oh and I'll let you know how the new razors go as soon as I know!

Thanks Harry!  I appreciate the family and beard comments!

Bump Patrol was the first thing I used and it worked alright.  Just tonight I bought the Bump Stopper shaving gel and bump treatment. So we'll see how those products work after a couple of days.  Hopefully they work well!

Looking good. You have the right idea about only shaving WTG on that spot until it clears up.

Thanks for all the feedback and tips!

So, the bumps are getting better each day!  Here's what I've been doing so far:

I got a brand new blade on my Headblade and got the Bump Stopper shaving gel; shaving with the grain and using a lot less pressure, and making as few passes as possible.  After I shave, I rinse with cold water, then run an ice cube all over my freshly shaved dome.  After that, I swab it with Dickinson's Witch Hazel toner from Walgreens.  Then apply the Bump Stopper-2 bump treatment.

Since I normally shave my head at night, I repeat the Witch Hazel/Bump Stopper-2 regimen in the morning and again in the afternoon.  On the nights I don't shave, I repeat that regimen again.

I've done that 4 or 5 days now and really just starting to see big improvements, as the bumps were really bad and really red.  Unfortunately, no matter how bad I want them to disappear immediately, they just don't!

Welcome Matt, the bald look is working great for you, it's a keeper!
Glad to read that the bumps issue is getting better. With time you will improve your technique and skills and also, by experimenting, you'll find the shaving products that work best for you.
