I am considering shaving my head as part of a general significant change in my life.
Here's my situation: I'm leaving my career as a corporate banker for a blue collar job. I have had the usual "executive cut", neat, parted on the side and fairly thick on top, tapered down the back and sides, for my entire career and I'm clean shaven.
But I am starting a new career as a mechanic in about two weels. It's a major break with my white collar banker past and it even feels like a whole new identity is being given to me.
So I'm getting rid of my old identity: my Armani pinstriped suits, my neckties, my fancy shiny wingtips, my briefcase and my corporate office, and then the thought occurred to me - maybe - I'll shave off my expensive corporate haircut, too, and throw out all of my hair along with everything else?
I'll go bald for the first time. I have plenty of thick hair and I don't have hair loss. But the idea is interesting. I associate it with freedom and experimenting. (Has anyone else thought that too?)
My ex said it might be interesting to try. She's the only one I told.
Also - Maybe a beard? I'm used to my clean-cut exec image. I really like the idea of doing something different and looking at the world differently even as I start a whole new career. But I have to admit I am note sure what the reaction will be - or how it will look!
I'm wondering how others have deal with the hesitation. And if you went through with it, were you glad you did?
-
Where there's an itch, scratch it.
I say go for it.
-
Already replied in your intro thread before reading this...but wow man! The change in lifestyle you have already taken regarding your career is major....this is just hair...and like I said before....it will grow back. So go ahead and DO IT!!!!!!!!
-
Thanks Tyler - yes, it is like an itch. ;D
Good point Rob. The head shave is a smaller change than the much bigger change in careers, I guess. I knew there would be layoffs at my company a while ago and decided to be proactive, and that led to a completely different road that started with a joke from a mechanic friend that he would train me - and that led to a mechanic's training class. So, yeah, in two weeks the business suit, the tie and the Italian shoes are coming off and the coveralls and work boots are going on and replacing them. It is a whole new identity in many ways.
It's a challenging time of taking risks after a life of being too cautious. So shaving off my hair would be a part of that. i would like to be proactive there as well. Maybe my hair will join everything else that is now part of my work life!
-
go for it!! I did it because I got an itch to try something new - I have a full head of hair like yourself, but there is nothing like that first time you feel your head and it is smooth and slick. . . It grows back quick if you dont like it, but I guarantee you will!!
-
Thanks Jay - I didn't know if there would be many guys here with a full head of hair.
-
And just think.....no hair to get any grease and grime in once you really start tearing those motors apart!! Be sure to post a pic once you do the deed!!
-
Ha! That's another reason: I'll be going from a job where an expensive haircut was part of the uniform and an asset, to a job where no one will care and it will serve no purpose. But I'll be learning a lot about going from white to blue collar!
-
Thanks Jay - I didn't know if there would be many guys here with a full head of hair.
We have a fair number of guys here who are Bald by Choice so this isn't 100% unusual.
I applaud you loudly for making such a bold move with your career and your life.
Shave your head, grow a goatee, and get yourself a Harley...... then the transformation will be complete!! :*))
-
Well, that would be next: sell my yuppie car and buy a Harley!
Thanks for the encouragement. The people at my current job who know where I am going in my career think I'm crazy for the most part. One guy said "You're going to be a grease monkey!" This is the first place where there is support. I just figure that mechanics will be more important in the coming years than bankers.
As for the head shave: If I do decide to do the deed - and it looks more likely - I will ask my barber to do it. I'm not sure about cutting off my own hair the first time.
-
Timbo, I too posted on your introduction. About two years ago, I got the itch and also lost a bet to my sly neighbor. So I had the barber scratch the itch for me. I also was a white collar worker in the local government office. Very straight laced atmosphere. Three years ago I had enough of the office politics and retired. I too had a full head of hair and decided to become BBC. As I said, that was two years ago. I embraced the baldness to the extent that I am currently going through laser treatments. While I enjoy the slick feeling and freedom of haircuts, I hated the shadow that plagues most of us. My feeling is that if I'm going to sport the bald look, I want total baldness. And of course I bought a Harley to complete the freedom of the white collar world. All I can say is that the ball is in your court. Either score or sit on the bench. lol. And of course it is your decision and good luck on your new profrssion.
-
Great post papa don! O:O
So you were a white collar man and left it behind and also are bald by choice. That really connects with how I am thinking now. My job is very straitlaced too and I fit right in for years, but iit is only since I started looking into a blue collar job that I started feeling dissatisfied with being a 'suit'. I don't even know why: I guess I had never considered anything besides the executive track and corporate success.
I stopped by my barber today during lunch and asked if he had any experience shaving heads.
He asked "Who wants to shave his head?"
I said "Maybe me"
He didn't believe it. He then asked me if I lost my job! I told him about the change to becoming a mechanic-in-training. He was stunned. Then he believed me about the head shave - so if and when I go through with it, he will do the job. He told me I would become a real workman doing a real job like him and that he would do it for free. After all these years he will now see me as having a real job. ;D

What it comes down to is: How will people respond to my new look? I am excited and fascinated by the idea of changes, but I admit I fear it as well. I will be treated differently, I guess. I know the answer is to not care what others think but I'm not there yet all the way.
-
Don't worry too much about what might happen. We all think the whole world is rotating around ourselves, but it isn't. I'm sure you can handle any situation that might occur.
-

Well if your bank is in a major metropolitan area, no response at all. My office is in a building w/ about 9 floors of Captial One offices, and loads of guys either sly or tight, tight buzz. Surprised your bank isn't the same, all the banks here have lots of sly guys at all levels.
-
Hi Noggin:
Yeah - that's true - a little self-absorbtion on my part. ;)
I just read your greetings Noggin - your comment was almost exactly the same as my barber's when I just saw him again; I should mention he is almost bald. I was leaving the building and he said "I'll make you one of us in a few minutes! I'm always glad to help create another baldy."
Funny - I have had my hair cut there for years and he is always politie (calling me 'sir, etc.) but never friendly. Now he treats me like a friend. :)
-
Saintc- yes, there are some guys with a buzz, but none that are bald.
But I am really thinking about all of the other changes that are all part of a major transformation and a head shave is just part of that. I'll be a mechanic (still in trainng) in two weeks and I will be entering a new life in many ways. So that is going through my thoughts as I write. It's a new door opening and a great opportunity but there will be many adjustments so it is all part of the same transformation from white to blue collar, executive to mechanic, etc - it's a break with the past in many ways.
-
Hey Timbo,
I say go for it. You will love how it looks, feels and the looks you will get along with the smiles from both women and men. There is some kind of unwritten rule that sly usually acknowledge each other with a slight smile or a nod. Once you go sly, let me know if you experience this too. I am sly by choice also. Enjoy :)
-
Welcome Timbo!
I've worked a few different types of jobs before and after college, office and outdoor, and I'll always remember the two summers of my first two years in college.
I worked for my girlfriend's dad (a general contractor) doing manual labor in the hot Georgia sun, doing anything from breaking concrete slabs to framing barns. At the end of each day I could walk away from the site, turn around, and look at what I had helped create. It was more fulfilling than any office job I've ever held (doesn't quite come close to playing music, though I don't really consider that as work :)).
I hope your new career path and smooth dome treat you well!

Maybe you're just in the wrong bank--that conservative they probably only loan to people who don't need money! >:D Every bank I know of has sly guys, and I'm an attorney who used to do a lot of transactional work and that meant bankers both here, Charlotte and NYC.

It does seem to be a brotherhood. :)

A transition is a good time because you will be meeting a lot of people. Then in a few months, you will know as many people who can't imagine you with hair as remember you with hair. And both groups are equally irrational about what they prefer...
(PS. I moved 9,000 miles around the time I started going SLY.)

Thanks for the welcome Bill. I made the decision to move to a manual job because I knew there were layoffs coming and I would be out of a job soon anyway. I don't think I would have thought I would ever move from a career in finance to a blue collar job in ealry middle age. But I want the satisfaction of a job well done and i want to get away from the rigid world of the corporate office.
My mechanic at the garage I have always gone to said "If you ever get the pink slip I'll train you to be a grease monkey" He was joking, but I took him up on it.
A shaved head would be part of that new life.

Ha! ;D
Yes, it's very conservative and traditional. I have been rebelling against it inside lately.
But it doesn't matter now anyway. My job at the bank ends in ten days and after that - it's cars and trucks and a garage! I picked up some timberlands today at walmart - and paid about 20% of the cost of one pair of my wingtips. There will be some perks to this new job.

That's what I am thinking too. I have never been to the garage where I will be working.

I went SLY for the 4th of July---since then---My wife and I have found each other again, my son received another stripe-ARMY-I became a grandpa-DO IT, MAN! Good Luck!

It sounds a very exciting idea: ditching the old 'you' for a totally new 'you' : I say go for it, and you'll probably love the freedom and the change. people will treat you different, and you'll be able to break away from the suit image. The good thing about being SLY is that casual works just as good as a suit, and both styles look extra cool with a bald head.
I too have a full head of hair, and I shaved it all off 4 years back: best thing I ever done.
8) Welcome, by the way! O0

It is exciting.
Question for you Rob: How would they treat me different. i mean - in your opinion?
-
I just think people judge people different depending how they dress/wear their hair. In a positive way I mean. I think people will accept you more in your new career, at least subconciously, and you'll probably look younger too. It's not just about other people, I think you'll find you act slightly different with a shaved SLY head: maybe more confident. I think it should suit you. 8)

Thanks a lot - that makes a lot of sense. It would probably allow me to be accepted more quickly in the new world I am entering.

A whole new world, brother!!! Could it be I am finally comfortable again?? Good luck, my friend--this is a GREAT fraternity.

Comfortable - yeah - that really rings true for me. Wow this feels good to talk about. O0
I am not comfortable anymore with my life and my career and my image. Maybe that is the itch (to use Tyler's word) that makes me think about getting rid of my hair.
It's the itch that is making me leave the only career I have known. When I first started talking about the mechanic training class with a sceptical friend, he said after a while "I was going to try and talk you out of it because you wouldn't belong there, but you've got an inner blue collar guy inside and you might as well accept him now and let him live"
Now maybe there is an inner bald guy trying to get free inside me and he's putting up a fight to be heard. It's just that the old me is still trying to hold on to life! ;D

I never thought of that. That really made me think.

I say just go for it. I'll bet you will look great! I have never had a barber shave my head, but I would like to give it try sometime. I used clippers for many years, then went to beard trimmer to get it real close. Last Halloween I cut my hair into a mowhawk. Kept the mowhawk for a couple of months, then shaved it off and never looked back. I am SLY for life. Love being bald.

Thans for the coments. Question for you: How long did it take you to make up your mind to shave off your hair? I started thinking about it a few weeks ago - it just came into my mind - and I have been thinking about it every day for the last two weeks. Did you think about it much first?
-
Get your head shaved & don't worry what others will think. Hey, it's your decision after all! I promise that you will love the experience & will not regret it.
All the best, matey.
-
I have actually been shaving my head on and off for about 20 years. I hate having hair on my head and body. I shave everyday. I used very close clippers twice a week for years. I guess this last time that I shaved, it felt very different more liberating. I seem to get more attention from both men and women and I like it. I think you should do the deed this weekend and post new pics of you being sly. Like my bald brothers have told you, you will love it. :@`
-
Go for it and enjoy being SLY BALD - - -Remember it grows back if you do not like it
I have never been so happy in my life - -I love being completely BALD - -
-
If I go through with it, it will be after my current job at the bank ends next week. My barber told me he would shave my head for free (after years of paying him plenty of money for my expensive haircuts ;)) He said he was looking forward to it. ???
I won't be in the financial district again for long time after that; my new job is at a garage in a neighborhood far from downtown so I wmay give him one last visit before leaving that office building for good!
-
Tim, get your head shaved or buzzed from your old barber, take one last look around and kiss that whole area goodbye. A positive change awaits, so get on with your new life, new look and new attitude. O0

I never thought of that. That really made me think.
Glad to be of help! O0 What I also meant i guess is that the new haircut will help you leave the old you behind: give you a clean slate: you can be who you want to be. Sounds corny maybe, but it's true. Also, you won't be just another corporate guy with a corporate haircut: you'll show up more, and people will notice you, and that will give you a new-found confidence. 8)

Glad to know you have a date for your headshave. As many have said you will not regret it.
You brought up some interesting questions and those have gotten some great replies. One made me stop and think, how long did I think about shaving off my hair before doing it ... for me well over 20 years. Now 13 years of shaving later all I can think is how I wished I hadn't wasted all those years wanting to be bald when I could have been!
I made a major career change in 1996 and made the decision that becoming bald would be a part of that change. I went from a very "proper" white collar job to working in a trade that it just didn't matter whether I had hair or not. (Much like what you are getting ready to do.) I went from a very appropriate business haircut to a #3 buzz and then a #2 buzz and then a #1 buzz and in November of 1997 I took a razor to the #1 buzz and off it came. In 2002 I made the decision to return to my former choice of careers but decided that I was going to do it bald. Started interviewing and in 5 weeks had a job where I still am today. They really don't know me any way but bald and even though it is high profile and "white collar" no one questions, except those who are too interested in shaving their heads.
In 2004 I started on my journey with tats, and although everything I have can be covered at work, I have well over 50 and plan to get more. My family and wife have accepted all this without many questions and I am so happy, way more happy than I ever was back before I shaved bald. I could still have an almost full head of thick hair, the crown is bald now, but I choose not to. I guess what I am saying is that you need to do what makes you happy. Like Tyler told you, once the itch strikes, there is no way to make it go away but to scratch it. We will look forward to hearing about your transformation. If you begin to question it between now and then, just come on back and talk to us that have taken the plunge and aren't looking back.
PS I have a college degree and over 100 hours of graduate study with a Masters. It was great to move out of the "stiff white collar" world for me. Even though I decided to come back into 7 years later, I am a far better person, far kinder, and far more understanding because of those 7 years of manual work. It brought down many barriers between me and those I deal with everyday in my present job and has given me a totally new prospective on life. Of course shaving my head helped so much as well! Good Luck!
-
Tim,
Are you in San Francisco?
No - Chicago
There is one thing you will need to get before late October... ...a parka with a hood attached. Take it from someone who has braved many a Chicago winter. Hats are OK, but they tend to get left sitting somewhere, or not taken when it seems warm in the morning, and the wind blows in from Iowa during the day.
It is very convenient to be able to walk into a warm place and just flip the hood back, and not have to worry about keeping track of a hat until you go outside again. It's always there for you.
And we're here for you. I changed my work a few years ago, going from an office to a field service job (same company (Chicago northshore based) different location). I really enjoy the change. I hope you do too.
-
Great post. Thanks. It sounds like you have doen a lot of what I plan to do. I have followed the same path all my life and I am the only one who can change it. I was going to get a buzzcut first - but decided to go from full head of hair to bald and get it done.
Glad to know you have a date for your headshave. As many have said you will not regret it.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that! I never wore hats before except on the sub zero days in Chicago. So the hooded parka and a sweatshirt too are on my list. I know I will be outdoors a lot more just at the job itself.

Chicago in the winter...you will definitely need something with a hood.

-
A bank VP - so you really understand from the inside. A part of this decision for me is a practical adjustment to working in a garage. It isn't going to make any sense to show up for work and take an engine apart with carefully combed gelled hair. This way I don't have to worry about it and save money.
Did you go from white to blue collar at the same time that you shaved off your hair?

The only regret I had was not going straight from the business cut to slick bald. It took me about a year to work down to it through the various buzzes. What I really wanted to do all along was to walk into the barbershop and tell the barber to shave it off slick bald. Wish I had done it when I was 16 instead of waiting until 38! Go straight for the slick, no looking back.
-
That's what I'll be doing - going from the business cut to slick bald. I suggested to the barber that I do it in stages - but he was the one who said: "If you're going to do it, do it right". He called my current haircut 'standard suit' because that is what almost all of the men in the building ask for. He suggested a total head shave is better than a slow change. And that is what i am looking for: a total change.

Make sure you are facing the mirror so you can see the change!
-
My barber will take care of that. :)
He said he wanted to see my face when the hair comes off. I think he is enjoying this - when I told him about becoming a mechanic, he was the one who said "So you finally got a real job! Now you'll know what it means to work every day!"
After all these years of calling me 'sir, he tells me what he really thinks of bankers! ;D
Make sure you are facing the mirror so you can see the change!

Shaving your head seems to be a great equalizer. I guess it removes any false images taking you right down to bare nothing. But oh what a bare nothing it is. Maybe we should start a count down for you. 4 more days until the new you is born!
-
I saw him today and he said something along those lines: "Just a few more days and you'll be coming down off your high horse?" He was joking but I think he meant it too. I had not thought of myself as being on a 'high horse'... :o
It will mean being taken down to the bare nothing. I realy see that now. I hope I deal with it well!

Timbo, I'm concerned that you are somewhat equating shaved bald heads with blue collar work. That is the farthest thing from the truth. If you are going to shave your head, make sure you do it because you want the change, and don't equate it with being a mechanic. The two are mutually exclusive. I've known many mechanics with a full head of hair.
OK, if you're coinciding your new look with a new career, that's fine, if you're up to it. Many guys don't do both head shave and career change at the same time. It could be a bit...tramatic. All the more reason to do it before you leave the VP world.
Also, if you think shaving your head while still working your current job might burn a job bridge if you decide to go back; rethink this one too. If you did a gradual trim down to shaved head, most people wouldn't notice, or really care much.
I'm all for you shaving; I just want you to be sure you're wanting the change and doing it, such that you won't regret anything.

Excellent Post, thanks for putting that out there. Many of us who have careers that might be stereotyped as "conservative" even stogy have found that our shaved heads don't cause any issues at all and that we have lots, and I do mean lots of company as sly. I can say that I rarely if ever go through a day as a lawyer in a high rise office building with other law firms, business, accountants and yes the offices of a major bank without seeing numerous other sly guys, not just one or two. Sly isn't defined by a class conscious view of the world, it's a response to a genetic predisposition--nothing more. But, even in my job, I find that knowing lots of people from every walk of life makes life more interesting. But it's nice that others have found the freedom of sly, and that IMO is the big thing with Sly--FREEDOM.

very true: SLY looks great dressed up or in casual, and nothing better than a SLY with a suit and tie! 8)

There is a lot of misunderstanding here about what I have said.

You'll find that happens here Timbo, as you can see opinions vary. A thread can veer off course very quickly. Do what feels right for you.

It's weird - there are lectures about how all mechanics are not bald and that I shoudn't assume they are.... ???
I would never think something so stupid and never said anything like it. One lecture starts another - and it isn't related to anything I said. :o
Well, I guess that's the way a form works...

Really, just go with what you want to do, Timbo: it's obviously got everyone interested and fired up with all the 'advice' we're giving you: it's great what you are doing, and I for one am interested to see how the story ends! O0

I agree with Rob. ....just go with what you want to do. It sounds like you have been planning the career change for some time and have been thinking about the headshave for just as long. Just go ahead and do it. it takes courage and a lot of confidence to do what you are about to take on. There aren't that many people out there willing to take all of that on. Good luck to you and let us know how it works out on Friday. You've come this far talking about it...now you just have to do it.
-
Timbo....how did you make out today on your last day? did you shave your head?

This.
Let's see a pic whenever you decide to shave it down!

I just have to chime on all these posts... he was supposed to shave Aug 6 and posted nearly every day for a while about every aspect of planning this...yet Aug 7 and nothing. I remain a bit sceptical about the entire story but didnt want to speak out about until now. The whole thing seemed odd in that at most any bank if they eliminate your job they escort you out that day rather than give you 2 weeks to run amok as it were. It is just too big a risk. It all sounds like a kind of fantasy perhaps...

Ya think? ;)

You think he was playing us?

Had the same thoughts but you give the benefit of a doubt.
He also seemed a bit ....thin skinned. "Oh my god there all picking on me!"

Which is typical of a forum troll. They take umbrage at some real or perceived sleight and then make their exit before they have to report back about what they said they were going to do on a given date.
Another thing: do you think anybody quits their job for a total career change in anticipation of a layoff, instead of hanging around to collect the severance package and then making the switch? @n(

Timbo !.... Speak up where are YOU!? >:(
-
Come on guys, have a little faith. It's only been one day since his major life-altering decision of a drastic career change. Maybe he just needs some time to get his affairs in order.
-
C'mon, he was posting up a storm two weeks before, why not anymore? Where did he go? :D
-
LOL he played with all of you, got off on it and and took advantage of your trust. He almost had me fooled too... but it was too homoerotic somehow...to be true.
-
Homoerotic? ??? Riiiiight...
Well if he felt the need to give us the runaround on a basically anonymous forum for his own pleasure, then I feel sorry for him.
If that's not the case, which is seeming like less of a possibility, then I hope we hear from him soon.
-
Maybe he's too busy being a mechanic to post with us again! :-\
-
I've a feeling he was someone who may have been a member at one time. It's a shame we fell for it.
That's what you get for trying to help.

hmmm: yeah: I had the same idea. Pity really...and yeah, I guess you could say what he was planning to do was a bit of a fantasy... :-\
-
That's what you get for trying to help.
Yeah, it's galling. But I rather get strung along by a putz than to miss the opportunity to help someone who really needs it. Worth the trade-off I'd say.

I agree bear, but I will be a bit more wary with future suggestions. I also pm'ed the said "putz", so I'm ticked off about that as well. >:(

Well whatever satisfaction he got from this charade....more power to him. :/O Either way, the advice that was given in this thread could still help others in similar situations (maybe not so extreme) who happen to read it, which is what this site is all about.....so its all good in my book!! Not gonna lose any sleep over the couple of minutes it took me to make some posts.
