None of the above:
calories 1500 per day goal, usual wind up at 1800-2000, particularly on weekends--I live in NO not a diet mecca :D. For a sample of how dietetically challenging my home town can be, take a look at this article from this weeks New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/28/dining/28note.html?hpw ---I mean 1000 restaurants in a city with less than 400,000 people--get real, and most serve wonderful food with layered flavors--try sauteed trout, topped with a fried softshelled crab and hollandaise sauce--yes that is a dish called Trout Pontchartrain, it's fabulous.
Carbs- low glycemic, otherwise known as complex carbs, oatmeal, beans, whole wheat products
Protein- hi protein, all forms--red meat, chicken, fish, eggs--won't eat turkey or canned tuna fish
Fats--primarily olive oil and some real butter, no transfats at all
No canned or processed foods, limited frozen.
Vegetables--fresh and steamed, not boiled. Sometimes baked.
Guilty pleasures: Dark chocolate--actually not so bad, El Rey when I can get it :@`. My down fall is white rice, I can eat it w/ just butter and if available, and, sadly, if no one is around to watch, I'll eat every last grain--even if I know someone will ultimately find out, it's an addiction :'(.

Putting the fork down when deemed appropriate and never eat to satiety...and no sugar or fast food.

I agree with RyanJP. And Im going to have to take my cardio up a notch.

Marty, good point and myself would factor in any sort of excercise/PT, NEPA ( non essential productive activity ) to this since yes a sound and disciplined diet will get results but incorporate what I just said and you will feel better, be healthier and get better results and even gain a few pounds of good quality muscle. The best anti aging medicine is a good pair of shoes.
-
All of us: watch our portions and moderation.
-
Marty you nailed it for me. For me its portion control.
-
Like saintc and others, none of the above.
For me, it's stopping when full, eating real food (luckily, I'm an expert cook), and daily exercise (I "power walk" two miles every evening).

I just had lunch today w/ a friend who had an out of town guest [Jazz Fest] who has lost 130# since the beginning of December 2009! He is in the wine business in Sonoma, CA and had come w/in 10# of 400#, he is about 6'3" or so, and he had to do something. He walks 3 hours, that's right 3 hours, a day, sometimes more, and eats sparingly to put it mildly. His goal in his 10 days in New Orleans is to visit the city, do the Fest--where food is a major attraction--and lose weight. So far he's dropped another 2# while here.
I'm stoked after my lunch, but I ate all my lunch anyway :(. Not a good start, I know.

My "diet" is to eat generally healthy foods and, like others have said, not stuff myself. It is ok to not clean the plate. I also drink enough water to drown a fish! I do exercise too. Running, biking (though not nearly as much I would like to or have done in the past), and various routines with the Perfect Pushup handles.
I try to keep in mind that I don't necessarily need to exercise everyday, but I do try to do enough exercise to create an overall calorie deficit for a given week.
I am 5'10" and 168 according to my scale. I am happy with my weight, it's just my shape that I need to work on. :*)) :*)) I'd like to be a little more toned over all and specifically I like for my stomach to be a little less round. I am working on both.

Meh. I don't believe in going hungry. That only leads to cravings down the road that make it harder to keep any weight loss off permanently. I make sure that whatever I'm doing is sustainable. I eat until I'm full, but no more than that. And that's something I can easily keep up for the rest of my life. Going hungry, not so much.
I think "my generation" was ingrained with "eat everything on your plate" and "people in China are starving", so we grew up with a habit of over-eating.
I try to stay conscious of how much I'm eating, and stop when I've had enough. Just being mindful of this has made an enormous difference in the amount of food that I eat. And I never go hungry, so I never feel deprived.
-
I eat anything and anytime i want -- junk food / heathy food i don`t care . .
Cause i never gain any weight . / well maybe my stomach sticks out sometimes . . D*0g

Ouch, that hit home, a grandmother from the old country, Sweden, and she thought a thin kid was a sick kid--so she worked on me. She couldn't walk in the kitchen w/o a pound of butter and a pint or more of cream going into, "yust a little snack." Then my metabolism went on early slow down.

None of the above. First, everybody is different, some need to cut fats (bad fats and not good fats), some carbs, some need more protein.
But more important, none will work without serious exercise. Muscle will burn more calories and keep fat off, so lift weights. Cardio needs HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)-slow plodding won't cut the fat, quick sprints will.
-
none of the above, i watch my portions, and ive lost 80 pound since august 24th 2008

Thanks guys for your input on this topic!

I have lost 18 lbs. in 2 months by doing the Low bad carbs, low fat. The only thing I have added was Lean proteins instead of just any proteins, and exercise.

A lot of what I have done to lose weight is to eat less bad stuff. Bad carbs and fat. But I have times of eating foods I like and junk food. My doctor tole me there is NO forbidden food. But she did say that I should watch how much and how often I have some of the less healthy foods. But at the last checkup on my diabetes, whe was pleased with my weight loss.

This is exactly what works for me. I know that if I were to tell myself "You can never have fried chicken again", I'd end up craving it, and go off the deep end. So I can still have fried chicken -- but only when I really really want it. I'm lucky in that I'm quite handy in the kitchen and so have complete control over what I eat and how it's made.
Also, in addition to just making sure I stop when full, I've become conscious of how much I was grazing. Until I paid attention, I had no idea how often I'd wander into the pantry or open the fridge because I was bored, or it was just there.
Now, when I reach for a snack, I stop and ask myself "Bear, do you really want that snack?". And I really think about it. And if the answer is yes, I go ahead and have it. But I'm surprised at the number of times that the answer is "not really" and I just find something other to do than stuff my face. It's cut down on the amount of snackage I consume considerably without making me feel like I'm missing out on anything.
That sustainability is the key for me. I know I can keep this up because I don't feel like I'm "on a diet". I just feel like I'm paying attention.
