Title: Proud to be bald: but if you could have all of your hair back?
Post by: Cris on January 12, 2012, 09:52:02 PM
This is a topic that has been running in my mind for some time.
One, lurking or simply reading on this magnificent forum, could assume that this is the place were people say "I'm sly and I'm proud!"
Obviously I'm not talking to the guys which like me had shaved their head despite having hair.
I'm talking to the vast majority of people here, who, because of progressive alopecia had decided to cut everything.
And it was such a liberation, becoming with time (or immediately, depending on individuals) a way of life, a sort of Manifesto, if you want.
BUT.
Have you ever considered the possibilty that, in the deep of your mind, you ACCEPTED a natural, genetic and irreversible thing (with style, that's for sure, but still a "forced adaptation") instead of really having made a free choice? Have you ever interrogated yourself regarding this?
"If I could have all of a sudden, my natural hair back? What I would do?" and more importantly: would it be a mind-changing thing?
Of course, for someone who actually STILL have his hair there is no doubt: he made a choice. He opted for a certain way of life, a certain direction. in presnting himself to the world out there (and to himself too) like that.
But the other ones?
I would like to pose this question to all of you.
Hope to have written it in an understandable way, because the question is quite phycological, and not easy to express for me, considering the fact that I usually write in a deadly, ominous, horrible english.

I thank God daily that He freed me from the tyranny of hair.

No, I would not go back to having hair.

I am MPB, but I wouldn't mind if I went to a Norwood 7 in terms of my hair loss and just have a small fringe to shave.  I am just fine being bald.  So no, I don't need it to grow back!

No way would I go back.  I wish nature would take care of the rest faster so I'd have less to shave.  I'm than glad that with every passing year, there's less hair on the dome.

Yes, but only if I could be eighteen again, too.

There are a number of things I'd do differently in that case...

Ironically, that's the vision I have on this...I remember jogging in preparation for the Navy when I was 18 and seeing my reflection in the window of a store I was passing watching my hair bounce up and down.  Thinking that this is how I would grow it out when I got out...

...never happened, but if I could have it back...I would.

Not the hair I had, thin, fine texture--made it impossible to look decent for long except with a whole lot of hair spray and then I couldn't put a hat on or it would get crushed, sweating could make me look like a drown rat--no way I want to go back to that.

Although I love how I look today, I probably would. But I would seriously need to teach myself how to tame my curls. On a side note, although I occasionally miss the barber shop experience, I don't miss the nonsense that goes on.

I'd rather have crabs than have my hair back. I'm sometimes tempted to let it grow back, purely to see if im starting to lose it naturally, but I'm not THAT curious. As I said once before, if there was a 'forever bald' pill, the only thing stopping me from swallowing it would be the fact I'd miss shaving my head.

Devonlad, ffs, take your shades off. You need to be 10 years older and 2 stone heavier to pull that look off ;)

I'm very comfortable with my appearance as a bald man, actually far more than I ever was when I had my hair.  I'll attribute that change to maturity.

Honestly, if it all came back on its own without surgery or drugs, I would likely keep it at least some of the time.  However I would be much more adventurous about how it's styled and not stay stuck in the rut I was in.

But in the interim, until some follicular miracle occurs...I'mjust saying NO to drugs, rugs and plugs!  Nothing good ever comes from any of them - except for the folks selling the s%^t.

But you look 'ideal' without hair, and when I say 'ideal', I mean you have the type of face and head shape that suits baldness perfectly. I dobt a follicular miracle would improve your appearance in any way.

Still not convinced about the bald head/full beard look yet though :) I dont mean on you specifically, but in general

I do sometimes wonder what all the magic potions in the mens hair section of the supermarket do.

My mission is to become a full time Bald By Choice.
I know that I want that because inside me I see myself as a Sly person :)
The hair sometimes I let 'em grow, but I feel really myself only when i take 'em away.
I'm sly inside, that's what I really want.
I know it.
I want it.
You guys are all so... this is really a great place.
I always say that the best journey one can do is not inside new places, but inside new, interesting, deep, warm, people.

If there was a lotion which gave me the same hair that I had 5 years ago, I would still stay bald.

When I did have hair, I also had friends and colleagues regularly saying "grey makes you look distinguished". What they were really saying was "grey makes you look 20 years older".  There was times when I thought about dying my grey hair.

Prefer to be recognised for being bald. Not being grey.

Agreed. Today is my 50th day and the best shaved I've had to date. Updated profile with today's smooth and shiney head. Going bald was one of best changes to my appearance I've made.

Think I've reached the point of no return.  :)

I initially started shaving my head because I was losing my hair. The idea of shaving didn't even occur to me at first, I tried using Rogaine which did produce some results, but I didn't feel like applying it every day. About two years ago I finally had the balls to decide to just get rid of it all, and now I like my sly look so much that I can honestly say that even if I could get all my hair back, I'd still shave.  O0

If I woke up tomorrow morning and I had the best head of hair that I ever had I would keep it. I would keep it long, down to my shoulder blades. It would either be in a ponytail or a tight braid.
It would have to happen without the use of any drugs or "surgical procedures" performed by a "doctor".
That being said I am comfortable being sly. I have seen the reality of what happens to certain body systems with advancing age and I accept that. When I first made the decision to shave my head, with the assistance of a horde of deer flies, I had already lost most of what I had on top. That made the decision to shave an easy one. I did it on impulse (flies again) and have never looked back.
I completely understand a man wishing he had his hair back and it surprises me that I have never done that. What it tells me is that I made the right decision.

My answer to the OP is no. My hair sucked. I never enjoyed having it, even when I was really young. I did start being BBC bout 8 years ago simply because I was done with having hair. The positive feedback from my peers flowed right in the next day. I knew this was my look.
Recently though, I found out I don't have much choice, as my hair has decided it doesn't like being with me anymore either.  ;D

I've just turned BBC, half because I'm balding but in such a way that I could keep my hair for a long time, I feel it's empowering and having hair made me feel like if there was a clock ticking. I'd keep my hair if I wouldn't be balding but then again, I'd probably shave it all off from time to time and I would have missed on the challenge to be proud of myself, letting go of my superficial traits.

Just one day when shaving there was less resistance on top for the guiding hand and the razor. Oh well. Now my blades won't run out quite so fast.  ;)

Think I know what you mean. Lately, I've been noticing the top of my head staying smoother longer than the sides and back.

At first, thought I was doing a better job of the top. The top stays smooth longer for another reason.

But if something were to happen that I was forced to grow my (remaining) hair out for an extended period, I would shave it all except for the back of the head where I would get one of those designs (a pair a dice, a champagne glass, etc.) that I used to get back in the day just for a flashback....

After thinking on this subject im pretty sure I would keep shaving... Before I almost always wore a hat even when I had all my hair and after having the freedom of no hair to worry about I just wouldn't go back. Livin and lovin the sly life!

My hair was always super-straight and required a ton of hairspray to control, plus I felt like I looked like a teenager sometimes when I had hair.

So no, I definitely wouldn't grow my hair back if I could.

I personaly like to look good, if you look good you walk with pride.  If you dress like a hump, you walk like a hump.   ;) O:O  Just saying.  The persona that is showen is the respect that you will get.

Good point. I enjoy the bald and beard appearance. Like to think it adds a spring to my step.

Nearly a year ago, I was clean shaven on the face and head of receding greying hair.

Now I look so very different. And am happy with the visual transformation.

As I am BBC, I have the option. To me the hair was just too much of a bother. It had to always be in place, if it wasn't then it just drove me nuts. (Yes, I may be a little OCD. Lol). So if I was wearing a hat, hard hat or the wind was blowing, I got annoyed. The wind don't bother me now!  Hehe. Anyway, no it really wouldn't matter to me.

I have to say I would like the hair back...but that's because I was early 20s when it started to go. If it started thinning now not sure I would be bothered. Went to a 40th birthday the other day and in amongst 40 odd blokes all between 30 to 45 years old I was one of only 2 bald guys...felt I looked so much older than everyone else. :(

When I was younger I could not imagine being bald and was thankful for very thick hair all the time. Still very thick hair last April when I went BBC. I was into gels, paste and spiked it every which way. The gray was too much and coloring got old. So here I am BBC and wish I had this enlightenment years ago. Definitely keeping it for good- it is almost addictive to shave it and feel it.

I'd have the hair back if I could.

But I'd gladly shave it. Then I would just go through the cycle of letting it grow for a year or something and then shaving it again.

Oh well!

I am BBC (bald by choice) and actually have very thick and full hair. Being hairless is so much better than having hair and Im actually envious of those who have lost their hair. Wish mine would just fall out to save me having to shave it every day. However, I must admit to having developed a bit of an addiction to shaving but the feeling of forever being totally smooth and without velcro on my head is very appealing.

Lets think. I'm now 72 so deduct 50 and that would make me 22. At that point I had the proverbial full, luxuriant head of hair-a friend who liked to run their fingers through it said it felt and looked better than wild mink. If I had that today, I'd look foolish, no man my age has that sort of covering unless they'd either kicked Mother Nature in the bum or played extensively with manufacturers of a better sort of plastic. Remember the criticism Reagan took about his hair? While I'm not trying to intentionally look "old" I am interested in seeming age appropriate.

And all that is the ripest corn as I shaved my full, luxuriant head of hair 15 years ago and have never looked back.  In other words, it was fun while I had it, did everything with it I could think of, DA flat top, pony tail down to my Lumbars, fades, business man's crop, Kennedy brush etc. And when I think of the hours of maintenance they all took, not to mention the cost, I wouldn't go back if I could. Just the years growing the pony tail and the hours to wash and wax it probably took several weeks out of each year. Not to mention trying to braid it-behind my back-for more formal occasions. (This was during the EuroTrash era when I lived in Frankfurt.) So, no, I'm happy as I am, my only regret is that I waited as long as I did....

I actually wouldn't want ALL of my hair back. I thought it looked best when my hair had receded to about a Norwood 2 (about 10 years ago). (It's now somewhere in the neighborhood of 2a-3a) I liked the "widow's peak" effect the 2 gave until it receded farther.

My hairline in my younger days was much lower down and straight across. Didn't like it except the year after I graduated High school, which was probably the first time I'd had a stylish haircut.

I've never been happier since I shaved it off -- I'm sure that if I grew it again I would be less happy -- that would be madness.

The funny thing is though today I was looking at some photos of when I had hair and [today] I thought that I looked pretty good then but I didn't think that at the time. I must generally feel better about myself now.

Also, I really like shaving it everyday. When anyone gets a haircut they usually feel better about having "tidied things up a bit" and this is something that I get to experience everyday. And I love the sound of the razor cutting through the hair.

Sometimes I think that I'm getting a little weird about it [maybe obsessed or something?] but then I just head on over to the DE thread and realise that I'm not that bad at all.

No effin' way, unless I could get decent, straight, thick, style-able hair that is. And green eyes that shoot laser beams. And a private island in the South Pacific. And a time-travelling DeLorean.

Nah, it's just not gonna happen, and just as well cause I feel better bald than I ever did with my hair on. Those few times I've been lazy and allowed it to regrow for maybe a couple of weeks (hardly past a #3 buzz) I could actually feel my confidence drop one notch every time I walked by a mirror... never again.

If I could be given a good hairline, if there was a reasonable way of doing it, I would.

I like being shaved down to a 1 now, I just don't really have any other good options as it looks really bad grown out.

Absolutely not. O:O

I shaved my head for the first time, not because of any kind of MPB or hairloss issues. I had red, curly hair halfway down my back and had for several years. No thin spots, no creeping hairline, nothing. But I did notice that grandad had a badly receding hairline, and my dad had a bald spot, so it might be coming for me anytime.

I never liked the way my curly hair looked unless it was long enough to ponytail. So, I wondered what I'd look like with a shaved head, and I could always grow it back if I hated it. So I donated my hair to locks of love, then went home and BICed it clean. That was in 1998 or 99.

Since then I have grown my hair out two or three times, but I never keep it for long and I always end up going back to shaving clean. Sly has been my look for the vast majority of the last 15 years or so. So much so that everyone I know has the bald me as the default in their minds. They notice when/if I have any hair and it looks weird to them.

Also I have a moderate case of Psoriasis that manifests as sores on the back of my head and neck between my ears. It gets worse the more hair I have and shaving has been the safest, fastest, cheapest, easiest, best looking way to control my Psoriasis and my self esteem.

Even if I could cure my Psoriasis outright, I'd prefer to shave my head. And so would my Wife  O0

I am happy being bald and bearded now.  However i really did love my hair!  In my late teens and early 20's, when I was big into heavy metal, I grew it out and it was long and thick, I do miss that hair.  Then as I got older I got into the 50's looks and wore my hair in a Pompadour...that tool a lot of time and I do miss that too.

Grew it out again a few years back just because but it was considerably thinner then when it was long when I was younger.  Cut it short and wore it as a cross between spikey and pompadour before a lady friend who I was dating suggested a buzz it.  Did that for a year and got a positive reaction from it.  Now a year since buzzing it, I'm shaving completely bald and am not turning back!

Here's a pic of my progression to sly and bald.

Hmmm... normally I would say now.

I do miss the trip to the barbershop, on occasion.

And I do very much like the new HIP hairstyles, shaved sides, tapered with LONG top... accented with a HUGE beard. Now THAT is awesome.

But I am good with what I have.

I had every trendy hairstyle there was to be had when younger and looked at bald/balding men and worried what would happen to my hair as I grew older.
Now Im 49 and losing it fast I dont care and dont want it back. Thanks to this forum I'm enjoying the bald/shiny look and couldnt be happier.Instead of worrying about my bald patches I now worry if my head is shiny enough !

I would be happy either way.   But instead mother nature has insisted that I am only allowed hair on about a 3rd of my head.   So sly I shall be, and happy about it.

If I had all my hair back I would shave it all.

No, I wish the remaining hair would not grow back. So many guys worry about hair loss but it is really almost  impossible to get rid of it is like weeds growing on my head.

Someone should make a product like Round-up for the head.

I'd never wish to have my hair back. I love being sly and can't imagine myself any other way.

If there was something that worked with no sides I'd be all over it

No way would I go back. Like others on this discussion, I'm looking forward to having to shave less hair. I'm between a Norwood 5 & 6 and am looking forward to reaching 7. There's not a thing I don't love about being a bald guy.

I've been losing my hair for 20 years, maybe when I was 24 I would have said yes, but now I would say no.

If I could grow all my hair again I'd probably just buzz it like had for 10 years before that, but would like to finish loosing my hair and be more low maintenance style
