Phillips Norelco Cool Skin 7700
« on: September 14, 2006, 01:04:38 AM »
As some of you know, I use an electric razor to shave my head.  Recently I broke a blade on my Remington, so being the impatient person that I am, I went and bought another electric razor to use while I'm waiting for my new blades to arrive.  The razor that I purchased is the Phillips Norelco Cool Skin 7700.  This electric razor allows you to use it both in and out of the shower.  It also has either shaving gel or shaving lotion that you can use to reduce irritation.

The Bad:

The first thing that really irritated me about this razor is the packaging.  You basically have to use a hacksaw to get the razor out of the packaging.  It's worse than the DVD packaging.

The plug - or lack of.  The only way you can charge this razor is to place it in it's charging station.  It would be nice to have the ability to plug the razor in while you're shaving.  This would really help me out since I travel a lot.  I wouldn't have to take the charging station and if I forgot to charge it, or the razor turned on during the flight and drained the battery, I could still shave my head.

Takes 8 hours to charge.  For this reason, it needs to be able to have a cord as an option.

Trimmer is akward to put on.  Since they have a compartment for lotion and gel, there isn't a place to put a trimmer.  Norelco's answer was to allow you to remove the other heads and place a trimmer in its place.  It's akward and time comsuming to do this.

The Good:

This razor is very light.  It doesn't weigh a ton like some of the other electric razors that I've used.

In and out of the shower.  I like that you can use it in the shower.  I haven't tested this feature yet, but it's nice from a clean up stand point.  My wife gets mad when I empty the hairs out of my other razor because you can never get all of them.  This razor has a clean from within system that allows you to just stick it under the water and it will flush out all of the hairs that it just took off of you.

Lotion and Gel does reduce the friction between the razor and your skin.  I still need to use it a couple of times to determine if it helps or hinders a closer shave.

I'm going to use  this razor a couple of more times before I comment on the actual shave, so stay tuned.

I have the 7735 version of this shaver.   Here are my thoughts:

I like the gel/lotion feature a lot.    However, instead of spending like 6 bucks on refill cartridges, I use and recommend just using your typical shaving lubricant instead.   Mine is the king of shaves alpha gel.   Anyways, basically if you use their cartridges they attach to the back of the shaver as instructed in the manual.    This shaver is also wet/dry, so it can be used in the shower.

Overall, the shaver is worth the 95 dollars.   It has caused little irritation/bumps and no cuts on my sensitive scalp, which is the purpose of the purchase.    The only downsides to this product are the 8 hour charge time along with the fact you have to use a plug to charge it, and the fact the shaving head likes to pop off frequently.    It doesn't hurt it or anything, but it happens when you go for hard to reach areas/the angle you hold the shaver.    Clean up is easy as you just rinse with warm water, but if you don't clean it well you will know as the battery will sound weak when you push the head of the shaver down(ie ready for use).

I recommend this shaver to anyone as long as you can deal with the charge time and the annoyance of having the razor head pop off a couple times while you shave.

There's now a 7775

Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Ted: That - good point.
Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.

Oh wait, there is a 7775.  Must be an upgrade!

I purchased the 7735X on the strength of these reviews and had previously been using a combination of 'Lectric Shave tonic and another kind of Norelco.

What a difference!! The shave is as close as my Mach3 and as smooth on my sensitive skin.  No more irritation/bumps.  I love it!  I'm going to see how it works with regular gel when the cartridges run out, but so far I am thrilled and am going to shave clean everyday from now on.  Awesome!

Also, the wife likes to use the other Norelco to shave her legs--now she does it everyday, even in winter!  Win-Win all around!

Trying to maintain my "lama on his day off" look, I am jumping from the Mach 3 Fusion (a great blade, admittedly) to the Norelco Cool Skin 7775X, based on the strength of these reviews. May my electric voyage be a positive one (further updates as events warrant, of course).

tomegnome, I hope the electric does you well!  Welcome to Sly Bald Guys.  That's a sweet picture; I always wonder how people get the color to stand out with a black and white.
