Hi,
Been a member for a week or so and just got round to posting an introduction.
As you can see from the picture I currently have the buzzed down MPB look with matching closely trimmed full beard. I've had this for a good few years now. Though I'm quite content with keeping things the way they are, I'm tempted to shave the beard down to a goatee and go for a total headshave. I'm quite fond of my full beard and even though some shaved guys can carry of a full beard, I think goats suit the 'sly look' better. More in proportion.
Whether or not I'll have the guts to go for it remains to be seen. I guess whats stopping me is knowing famoly and friends wouldn't like it. It's not as if I'll get a chance to get away on my own to try it out either. I tell myself if I'm happy with things as they are why change? Don't fix what aint broken. It probably wouldn't suit anyhow. After all the smooth look isn't for everyone.
45 now, I began loosing my hair in my late 20s and like a lot of you guys I wasn't impressed. I'd always kept my hair cut quite short. When it started to become noticable that my hair was thinning I got my first buzzcut which was the best thing I did. I started on a #4 and within three months or so was down to a #1 which I've maintained ever since.
I no longer have any hang-ups about being bald and I don't take it that seriously anymore. If anything I feel quite proud. After all it's cool, masculine and you never get a bad hair day! Great site by the way.

Welcome Rob (sheesh, another Rob....man, you guys are everywhere

).
Well, being sly is all about attitude and the fact you have no hang ups about being bald is huge. Like you, I was losing my hair in my 20s (early 20s for me) and met my wife while I was losing my hair. I also had no hang ups about being bald (kept it to a #2). However, I went sly on Jan 1, 2007 and you want to talk about a boost of confidence!!!!

Like most of the SBG's, family is usually the roughest critic when it comes to going the sly route, but if you're even thinking about shaving it off, you must give it 30 days.
Feel free to check out the forum for advice and feel free to ask any questions. We're a helpful crew.

I would say if you want to do it go ahead. My family has given me a hard time since going sly but I think what is most important is what makes you happy. That is super cool that you have no hang ups with your hair loss. I am 28 and the past two years I got pretty down about my hair loss at times. I have been sly now for about a week and I am getting used to seeing myself that way. I personally just feel cleaner when I have a total head shave verse thinned out male pattern baldness.
But either way you are going to look good. Right now you are kind of rocking the Jason Statham look but you might also like the way you look with a Stone Cold Steve Austin cut. Either way thanks for being a positive example to guys like me who are new to the hair loss business. Best wishes
Frank

Welcome, and Brother Schro tells the truth. My only addition would be that if, after 30 days, you're not satisfied you will get your short buzz back in a month essentially, and you already know the beard will return too. It's a "Try it, you'll like it!" sort of thing. Good to have you here.

Rob,
As you can see from my avitar, I often wear a full beard with my shaved head. I think that maybe you should try the full beard with the shaved head first. If you don't like it, then you can trim it down to a goatee. If you don't like the sly look at all, as others have said, it grows back real fast. Good luck! Glad you're here!

Hey Rob!
Welcome, buddy. The guys here are telling you the truth.
Try the sly look. I think you'll like it. Start with a full beard, you can always go to a goat if you want, but it takes a while to go in reverse!
On the other hand, it takes very little time to go from a shaved dome to a #1 buzz.
Really, you got nothin to lose (but a "little" hair)

Hey Rob: welcome to the forum. As you know, it's great here, and you'll get loads of advice (mostly 'SHAVE IT SMOOTH!!)

I agree. Shave it down and give it 30 days. You're nearly there anyway, and you could find out you really like it. Won't be much difference from what you got now.
Give it a go

Welcome, Rob09 ~ Good, SLY attitude you have there! Dealing with MPB without embarrassment, coverup, or inferior feelings is SLY!
I think razoring down to the scalp is a great option to be explored. Not much risk, as what you have in the way of hair now will grow back if you decide you don't like it. I, for one, after years of decreasing length buzzcuts, gave the shave a try and am completely hooked now. You might like it, too!

Thanks guys for your warm welcome. I'll definitely take on board all of your helpful advice.

Might try a zero buzz all over (head and beard) and see how that goes. It may be the compramise that I'm looking for. I'll let you know how things go.
Anyway thanks again. I'll definitely be keeping in touch and joining in with some of the discussions you guys have on here.
Take care
Rob
