what is best high foam (thick) shave cream??
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:21:15 PM »
Hey guys,  if you not sure what I'm asking quickly check this video:

You see when I shave with the grain Bald Guyz shave gel is the best.   But from the past 6 months I have been shaving I have noticed that I need a high foam (or thick or whatever you want to call it) shave cream to shave against the grain.  I need a shave cream that's high foaming or whatever you call it as in that video.
I know there are many but are there any that stand out?  I don't want anything that once appleid gives low foam.  That doesn't work against the grain for me.
What's the best high foaming shave cream you have tried?  (And of course if you suggest one and it has a low price that means it ain't good)  I can do with trial and error but hey if someone can give a suggestion it would save me both time and avoid cuts.
We all have different heads.

I'd be careful to confuse thick foam with protection.  In my history, it's actually been the reverse.

The best protective shaves have come from either shave oils such as Shave Secret and Pacific Shaving Oil.  The first protective cream I found was Citizen Smooth.  Though, there may be others out there.

Same experience here. Foamy shaving creams usually don't do anything except dry my skin out. No lubrication, no glide, no protection from nicks and cuts. The only thing they're good for is as a stain remover on carpets, clothing, that sort of thing. Trust me, if you ever need to get a big ol' blood stain out of white carpeting, g@@4 a can of Barbasol will do the job.

The best product I've used so far is Aveeno gel with the light blue cap. Second place is Head Slick, although I don't like the gunk factor.

I sorta disagree with Tyler on Shave Secret oil. It works OK for me in a pinch but it's nothing to write home about. It also seems to make the lube strips on blades disintegrate pretty quickly, IME.

Now I'm more confused than ever.   :/O
From my observations, I think a high foam shave cream will fix my problem because it provides something for the razor to remove and then as it does that it takes the hairs with it.   So as I shave the razor removes the cream and hairs at the same time.
With low foam shave gel the razor goes directly to the skin and hence irritation.  That's why that seems to be the problem with shaving against the grain.  It's too close to the skin.
So Tyler, are you telling me that the irritation has nothing to do with the fact that the low foam shave gel(s) allow the razor to directly "cut" my skin?
Please note that I'm still learning so I am creating theories in my head based upon experience.
(By the way, I have ordered the shaving cream from Citizen Smooth so it will give me another chance to put my theory into practice)

The Aveeno with the light cap is some good stuff I use it on occasion and get great results from it.  Next time your at the store pick a can up its not that expensive, you will probably get a can for about 5 dollars.  O0

$5 sounds good.  (The gillette series one I get for my face costs around $2.75 and the low price explains the low quiality).  Thanks, I will give that a try.   Does it create high foam on your head when you apply it?  I am guessing it does that's why you recommended it right?  :)

I went to shoppers drug mart across the street a few minutes ago (yeah it's 10:16 p.m. now)  to see if they had
Aveeno.  They don't!!  But then I kept looking for all possible shaving creams they had.   I looked around and I saw this shaving cream "Proraso shaving foam............for ultra sensitive skin", cost $9.99
Right after I got home I put some on my cheeks just to see how it foams up, and yeah high foam!!  So I will try that for tomorrow's shave.   I will keep Aveeno in mind and I hope to see it at some other stores here in Canada.

I used to use 'high foam' shave creams, thinking they gave me a better shave (it felt as if they did at the time) and a more satisfying expirience, because you can see more easily where the razor has been.  But now I'm not so convinced.  Most  'high foam' creams seemed to gunk up the razor, and I spent more time 'cutting' through the foam than actually cutting through the stubble! :/O

The best stuff I've ever used is shave gel, any make is better than the foam, though I do like King of Shaves best personally. 8)

In the end though, it's what works for YOU that counts: all domes are different! O0

Rob you got that part right all domes are different.  Ok, today I believe I have solved my problems.
And yes the solution is to get a high foam shaving cream lol.
Well sort of.   Today I first used the Bald Guyz pre-shave scrub and then I appled just a little of Bald guyz shave gel.   Then on top of that I put on that porasco shaving foam.   I was surprised how well it worked!!!  Yeah no irritation and I was able to get a good shave.
Now Rob, I know what you mean by cutting through the foam than actually cutting through the stubble.  That happened with me today, which forces me to take longer to shave, but when it does cut through the stubble it does it so well for me.
I will do this from now on I guess.  I want to shave every other day, and I can do that with a high foam shaving cream but not a low foam shave gel.
Tyler talked about not confusing protection and thick foam.   In my case, thick foam implies protection (yeah werid eh  :/O
Thanks for your comments guys.   O0

I use shaving soap and a brush, with a dab of Headslick in it. I find that the headslick prevents my skin from drying out, but the foam from the shave soap prevents the headslick from really clogging my blades.

Maybe you will have to come up with a mad cocktail of shaving gels/lotions/soaps to get it just right for your own skin O0
