WARNING: (new) Seagate HD owners
« on: March 06, 2009, 08:39:43 PM »
THiers topic reminded of this.

If you are a owner of the newer 500gb to 1.5TB HD's follow the links:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/seagate_barracuda_drives_failing_alarming_rate_are_you_affected
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/latest_update_seagate_firmware_upgrade_saga

You can google to find info related to figuring out if your HD could be affected.

My girlfriends 1TB bricked, I called Seagate, they paid to ship it there and back. They recovered her data, put it in a new drive and sent it back. I couldn't be happier.

You won't get that kind of service from Western Digital...

I've dealt with Western Digital....they stink

Agonizing over what cannot be is an insult to what is.

Good to know about the customer service experience; I bought a 320gb external Seagate in January after going back & forth about which brand to buy.  If you read all of the reviews, you'll never buy anything because you read horror stories for everything out there.  Anyway, I finally said 'screw it,' and I bought it... absolutely perfect right out of the box.  If you're like me, just go out and buy one before it's too late.

I had one for 3 weeks and it died, for not apparent reason. Took it back, got a Seagate and have been rocking their brand for years now O0 Can't say I've ever been disappointed.

Wow, I have been a WD user for years, NEVER had a problem, so I can't comment on CS. I wasn't against SG at all,, just "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"  ;)

Oh my 250gb is a SG.

Tom

Tom, you're probably right.  Sometimes it's a curse to have all that information out there.  In my case, I went through a whole lot of inaction because there are too many differing reviews, and probably most people have good experiences and just don't post them.  The point is to make sure you have a backup of your important data before anything serious happens.
