I had a TIVO a few years ago when they first came out and it totally changed the way I watch TV. Since I have moved to my cable companies provided DVR only because it has double tuners (watch something and record something at the same time or record 2 shows at a time) and it doesn't have a monthly fee (other than the $1,000,000 i pay for service every month). The other benefit of using the cable dvr is that if it messes up, they fix it/replace it for free. All that being said, i'm a big supporter of dvr's.  The pause live tv alone is worth it. Not to mention skipping commercials. You can watch a hour long broadcast tv show in 40 minutes. Gotta love that!

Warhawk, I don't have any experience with Tivo, but I do have DVR, and really like it.
Like Hookem, it just makes sense for me to get it as a package with the cable provider.

Comcast DVR here. Dual tuners and HD make TV watching very convenient and enjoyable. If I'm forced to watch an hour long show that wasn't recorded I usually hit pause for 15 minutes, do something else, and then watch it so I can zip through the commercials.

As hookem said, $1,000,000 a month, I don't want to watch commercials. DVR makes that so easy.

One day they're going to have to make a 2 minute long commercial that looks normal while in 5x fast forward mode.

When we cut cable and went to DishTV we got the DVR, in HD, included in the $1,MM monthly fee.  Love it, also being able to stop a show in progress and go back to it, skipping commercials and "catching up" to the live broadcast.  Very useful w/ FB games and relatives and friends calling about "important" matters during the game.
Only problem, although they fix the box--essentially a single purpose computer hard drive--when they replace it all your recorded shows go too.  We're on our fourth box in just over a year, which is a bummer.  The last time they had to send a tech out, free, to replace a replacement that was not totally functional.  I have a problem watching all the stuff I have recorded though.

I look forward to being able to add our own storage cards. Hopefully by then it'll just be something like a flash card with no moving parts like current hard drives. How nice would that be?

DVR = Digital Video Recorder. It's a digital way to replace VHS tapes. Unlike VHS tapes, DVR can record HD television.

TiVO is a form of DVR but is made by a company called Tivo. Has a few other bells and whistles.
