Cheating or not?
« on: November 19, 2008, 07:44:35 AM »
Ok, I am trying to settle a disagreement. I've learned moves solve a Rubik's Cube. They involve learning how to take a randomly scrambled cube and systematically manipulating the cube until it is solved. My wife  :@` and I go back and forth on whether or not this is "cheating." So let me know what you think.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

hmmmm i dunno.  But are there really moves you can learn?  If you are paying to learn these moves...i think you are being taken..

Yes, there are "move" or algorithims as they are called among the cube  elite (not me :) ). The videos are freely available on You Tube.

Definitely not cheating.

Chess for instance, learning some classic opening moves in chess is part of the game. They're even referred to by name.

Also like Sodoku. Sometimes you can only get so far without using a systematic approach.

I just peel the stickers off and stick them back on, when nobody's looking.

hey doug:  no... i don't think it is cheating.  it's similar 2 purchasing a reference book on the stragedies of blackjack or poker.  it's just a guide.  cheating would B "peeling" off the stickers on the rubik's cube.

While I don't consider it cheating, I'm wondering why anybody would want to do that. It sort of takes all the fun out of it...........

Isn't the point of the cube to solve it?

I would say no, it's not cheating.

It's just like making a game play for football.

When this thing first came out I was in high school and figured out "the system" to solve it.
My science teacher, who was smart but not a fast learner, decided that I would benefit more teaching him how to solve this puzzle than doing the assignments the other students were doing. He learned the system and I got my first A+ in high school that year!!

So no, its not cheating. Its learning and sometimes getting an A+  O0

I never peeled the stickers off.  I took the whole thing apart.

But I did get a book on how to solve it.  It's not cheating unless your goal is to solve it totally by yourself.

I don't think that it is cheating, there is still some thought to it and memorizing algorithms is fun :D

But it becomes addictive and now I need new stickers, I am missing a few.
