Welcome Tow!
There are answers to all of your questions in the vast archives of SBG.  Many use the Mach 3 or the Headblade, those seem to be the most popular in this community.  Generally cheapo razors will irritate and cut up your head.
I have tried them myself and now I use the Headblade(designed just for heads), and I have used the Mach3 as well and they both get you nice and clean.

Be sure to check the forum areas about how to shave your head and how to properly protect your head while shaving to get a broad array of advice from a legion of experienced shavers.

I don't live up that far north, but a nice wool cap is alot more warmth than hair.  I love being sly in the winter because I can wear a winter beanie and take it off as soon as I get inside.  When I had hair I always got really bad hat hair and I would sit inside hot and sweating because my hair was all matted down and greasy from the cap.

I agree with Dome very much on this point. Everyone's told me I've picked the wrong season to go Sly, but now I'll be free of hat head in the winter. This was always a big problem for me in the past, since I walk to work. Now, I'll look professional and Sly no matter how long I wear a hat for.

Also, I use a HeadBlade Sport. It takes a few tries to get used to, but then its smooth sailing. I know Headblade also sells accessories, like winter caps. I'm actually considering ordering one.

don't knock it 'til ya try it.  I love the feel of subzero Chicago wind chills on my gleaming dome; it's a real eye-opener! And the best thing is when the steam rises off your freshly-shaved scalp when you're walking outside...just goes to show everyone that you're really hot stuff!  LOL

I was in Milwaukee last February and it never got above 18 degrees the whole week.  After a couple of days though, I was OK without the hat.  Felt kind of good.

I am a bit of a hot head though....lol

hey tow:  as far as razors... the 3 most popular razors here in no particular order are the fusion, mach3, & headblade.  do some research in the HEADSHAVING section of the forum:  "what razor you use" "your shave routine".  since u live in detroit... wear a nice wool beanie 2 keep that noggin' warm. O0

btw... i am a die-hard fusion (manual) man.  it gets me the smooooothest.  the best part of "finding" the ultimate headshave routine is that U can experiment anytime & anyday. O0

As far as hats, in the past when I was Sly during the winter time I would rock beanies on the weekends and stuff and wool Kangols to the office. You lose a lot of body heat out of the top of your head, so even in the mildest of winters you gotta cover up. Likewise, you should also always protect your dome with sunscreen.

I ordered their "Team Thug" when I placed my order last week.
