Style for interviewing
« on: October 05, 2008, 05:32:50 PM »
Has being "sly" affected anyone in interviews?  Particularly, if you're BBC, have you noticed that interviewers treat you differently if you're sly?  I'm actually blessed with a full head of hair, and thinking of going sly again.  However, I don't want it to cause negative reactions in interviews.  I'm probably worrying too much about nothing, but wanted some opinions.  Thanks in advance.

I have had no problems at all in interviews or meetings with new people.  I think it is a matter of how you carry yourself.  Sly is becoming mainstream and not that unusual even for us BBCer's.

Over the last 6 years I've had two major interviews. Both work related and I'll be honest I'm BBC but I did let my hair grow out to a 1 or number 2 trim. When looking back with hindsight though it wouldn't have been an issue. I really know this. Paul's bang on, it's about how u carry yourself. Your manner, attire, bodylanguage your tone of voice, how u express that thing inside your head. Sly is very mainstream, I probably know as many sly guys in suits as I do in other areas of life.

The only time I may not shave if I'm honest for professional meets or other events in which my work leads me to  engage with a wider audience, is when I duuno I might have the odd bump. That's the only time other than that I want to be sly all the time.

Been on both sides of the table.

Had a job interview for a professional position while I was on vacation and had shaved my head.  Was somewhat uncomfortable in advance but once I walked in the room, I think it boosted my self-confidence.  btw-was not offered the position, but I'm sure it was what was lacking on the inside of my head (experience) and not what was lacking on the outside (hair).   8)

I also recently participated on a search committee for an executive position.  The chosen candidate was sly and it was never commented on by any committee members during the process.  However since he started working, I've had a few people say "he looks like you".    ....I take it as a compliment!

Sly is so mainstream now that I can't imagine it would be an issue in any profession - unless maybe a model for shampoo commercials!   ;)

Well I just started a new job so apparently it wasn't an issue.

I would have to imagine that a job where your hair or lack of was an issue would not be a good work environment in the first place.

The only logical job it should rule you out of? Model in a shampoo ad.

I didn't have any issue, but only been on one since I shaved just to check it out. Been at the same place for 15 years. I have hired 2 people in the last year, so no issue there.
I would think the confidence with who you are would show. A benefit that you are well groomed,,, the rest would have to come from you in either situation, hair or no hair.

I think you'll do
so I took off my hat and said imagine that, huh!

Being in the military, we once were subject to one shaving his head as a "Faddish" stylle haircut and it was against military regulations and sometimes it was held against us when were were interviewing for a key position.  About 6 yrs ago, I noticed an influx of personnel who shaved their heads due to male pattern baldness and they were now holding key positions within the ranks.  The regulations did change and support one shaving his head due to male pattern baldness is now an accepted thing.
