New guy--still has hair...for now...HELP
« on: September 29, 2008, 03:19:03 PM »
Hey SBG-- New guy here.   I still have my hair...but its been receding/thinning since high school and has been the butt of many jokes.  In january I'm going the fire academy and I'll have to cut my hair off (which I have always work long in order to cover up as much of my thinning as possible).  I won't lie SBGs--I'm not really to shave it off yet... but regardless I need to cut it short for the fire academy.  I was thinking maybe a faux hawk or something like it til I get to the point where its time to become a SBG (i'm afraid of what my friends will think, and I'm worried I'll have a funny shaped melon if I try to become a SBG now) I'm posting pics (sorry for the poor quality) of the hair and hairline now.  Lemme know what you think SBGs!

BTW I love the forum--makes me feel ok about losing my hair.

1) Since you're going to have to cut it short anyways, just get into the tub with a pair of clippers and gives yourself a buzz job. You'll get used to it before you know it.

2) Don't worry about the shape of your head. No one's is perfect, and everybody's is just fine.

3) Chill. It's just hair dude.

4) When you're ready, go for sly. You'll wonder why you waited so freaking long.

bootedbear is right on with that one.

buzz it short, if you then decide you want to try sly, go for it, if you don't like it, it will grow back.

Do a #3 buzz, you'll like it, and soon, I'm sure you'll try and like the sly side.  First step #3, and if you don't have a clipper, they have a model at Wal-Mart/KMart for around $10, don't spend a lot, you won't be buzzing for long anyway O0

Most fire departments lean toward a para-military culture, although not as much as police.  Im  a cop and all the firemen on our city dept have short hair with probably half having clipper shaved heads or shaved slick.  HEre in TX, the heat in summer is miserable by itself and that isnt adding the physical work and the weight of firefighting equipment, so being bald is a hell of a alot more comfortable.

Throwingbombs,
I understand its thinning, and can see some receeding, but is there a bald spot in the back?
Let me say I think your head looks fine to go sly, but I don't understand having to shave for the academy.
Do they shave you with a #1 clipper? And does it have to stay that way forever?
Basically, if your going to thin out eventually to a horseshoe, then definately shave before you get there.
There are alot of BBC (Bald by choice) guys on here that love the look. But its their choice.
Its also your choice, but you should do it because you want to.
The benifits are definately there, and there are feelings that are hard to describe.
If your going to a buzz #1 or no gaurd, definately give it a try to see how you feel. One week of growth will get
you back to the buzz style, and what is really one weeks time?

I dont see anythign you need to worry about.  Just do it when you are ready, but like the others have said.....you will ask yourself...why didnt i do this sooner.  HONEST TRUTH.  Because I think we have all felt like that after we finally shaved.

The Academy is a bit para-military--but THEY don't shave your head for you.  That being said, it is required that you have short hair so that you can get your masks on and stuff. . . so my hair the way it is now won't fly.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Small pics but yeah, it looks like you have fine hair but you're not receding much. In my opinion, I think you'd look better clipping it down with a #3 or #2.

I had fine whispy hair on top of my head and after a round of golf I wouldn't want to take my hat off because sweating for 4 hours made it look terrible. Needless to say I don't have that problem anymore.

I'm no expert but I think a buzz cut looks good on thin/fine hair especially if you're going to be putting on and taking off head gear all the time. I think it'll be a good look for you. Athletic look. Go for it!
