Welcome friend.

I would shave the thinning area completely leaving the horseshoe ring of hair on the sides.
Then maybe your GF will give in and tell you to shave it all off.  8)

I lucked out I guess. My GF encouraged me to shave it bald.

If she had given me grief I guess I'd have just dumped her immediately and then shaved it off. Now that I'm sly I get dozen of girls looking my way daily so I could find a replacement for her in an hour or two.

Remember to never take my advice seriously (unless I'm being serious) and you'll do alright.

Welcome dude.
I would go with whatever makes you comfortable. My wife wanted me to shave my head for the past year.
However...my previous girlfriend from many years ago hated the idea. Did I listen to the old girlfriend who
was really aginst me cutting my long thin hair ? Hell no. I cut it...she didnt like it and I no longer liked her.
I found someone younger, smarter and hotter.  8)
My only regret is that I didnt shave it all the way down like I do now.
Its YOUR head dude...dont let anyone dictate what you do...
peace
Shave your head.....free your mind.

Well here's an interesting wrinkle to everything...  My girl and I came back from a bbq today and there was a sly guy there we both did not know...  Our mutual friend commented that this guy recently shaved his head (I was wondering if he was a member of this group...) And she thought he looked good... So I struck up a conversation with this guy... Turns out he was basically in the same boat I'm in now and he loves the new look yatta yatta yatta...  So on the way home tonight I brought him up...  Instead of the usual NO WAY I know got a new answer which is "I hear it's very hard to maintain a shaved head". Now to most people you'd think that's a NO (my girl is an attorney) but that signals a slight change...  Hmmmmm anyhow taking a pre first shorter cut pic tomorrow before the big haircut on Wednesday...  Thank you to all and this is a great website

Welcome, BaldisGood. You’re in good company and in the same proverbial boat a lot of us were. This worked for me:
Seize this opportunity to get a really short buzz cut, ½ or ¼ inch all over and gauge the reaction. You can settle on that length consistently for a few weeks, then just go for a bald shave one day. By then, it’ll be 4-5 days before you’re back to where you started. No guarantee, but worth a shot!

Welcome to SBG's BaldisGood, good to have you with us.

It sounds to me you know what you want to do, but then there's always that other voice in the background.

I think you should compromise. Why don't you try the shorter buzz first, see how it looks. From there you can take it down slowly in increments, which would also allow your girl to get used to your new look.

Post up a pic when you can, and let us know how it goes.    O0

Go fot it.  You wont be sorry.  I had tinkered with the idea of going sly for years.  I got tired of the "ring" but even before MPB set completely in, I think the look is great.  YOU will too.  Get shaved professionally at least the first time and by all means follow the 30 day rule.  Keep it shaved smooth for at least that long.  If you like it, keep it.

Well as one of the lurkers here who finally finds a need to post...let me tell you my tale of somewhat woe...  Mother nature and I are locked in mortal combat...  Like my girlfriend, mother nature is winning 90 percent of the time - however this time I might win the big prize - a nice bald head...  You see for years I have hinted my desire to be bald and met with the not so surprising "are you kidding me" response - in fact for a year or two I never mentioned it - my girlfriend in fact went to the great lengths to contact my barber and tell him NOT to give in to any pleads of mine (though she sounds like a villioness in this story I love her completely as she does me) Anyhow I figured let time do the job and that's that...  A few weeks ago I had to pick up her up from her hair stylist...  You can not imagine my surprise when I went into the salon and was greeted by her very BALD very SLY stylist George... That got me thinking...  So I have made an appointment to see him this week... My question is do you think I approach him tell him I eventually want to be bald (for work and all the other trappings in life I need to take my hair down to nothing in steps) and have him work on the girlfriend...  Or do I just go in ask for a shorter cut progressively without him in on the act?  Advice is welcome and appreciated

Howdy. Read your post and want to comment about the maintenance issue.  To me, having and keeping a shave head is NOT high maintenance.  In fact, it's just the opposite. No combing, no trips to the barbershops(unless you're like me and enjoy having a barbershop headshave from time to time), and once you're good at shaving, running the razor over your head daily takes a FEW minutes. That's it. Nothing compared to the routine for hair(with exception of crewcuts, etc)

UPDATE

Well I took some very sage advice from a bunch of the guys on this board and proceeded to hatch a plan...  While I appreciate all the encouragement to "just go sly" - that is not a real world reality for me at least...  I am a professional and my clients might not know what to make of a suddenly bald me...  So I am taking my hair down in steps... remember my hair is... or should I say was fairly long...  at least 6 inches on the top and about 4 or 5 on the sides...  Anyhow...  I got my first of series of hair cuts today and wowed a lot of people....  I would say the top of my head is about 3.5 inches long now and the sides are about max an inch inch and a half...  So for me I am making a slow but steady progression to my ultimate goal and plan to live up to my avatar...  It's a start...  Here's to the next haircut (which I already scheduled :) in a few weeks)
