Every f*cking time!!!!!!
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:22:45 AM »
*dog20 goes outside to get something from grandma*
Grandma:  "Hey honey, how you doing?"
dog20: "I'm doing ok..."

[towards end of conversation]

Grandma: "You gonna keep your hair like that?"
dog20: "Yes"
Grandma: "If you'll just grow it out..."
dog20: "It doesn't look good grown out."
Grandma: "At first it'll be painful (the growing out part will look bad is what she meant), but then when it grows out, I know of a very good hair stylist, I'll pay for her to do your hair."
dog20: (giving up hope because no matter how many times I explain to her that I don't like my hair grown out, she always mentions me growing it back out) "ok.. (been avoiding eye contact with her at this point because I hate it when she talks about my head)

I'm obviously gonna keep my head bald so she is gonna have to deal with it.  I know I should have told her to accept me for how I am and if she can't then I'm embarrassed to have her as a grandma... but I didn't feel like seeing her disappointed face today.

I was in the same boat as you, but with my MOTHER.  She rode me a long time about shaving the head, but I finally told her ,with a no BULLSH*T Attitude, that if she hated it so much, and it offended her or emberassed her to see me or be seen with me then maybe I shouldn't come and see her anymore.  I know that statement hurt her, but see also saw that I was serious, and she never brought it up again.....
I was told to think outside the box, how did I get in the box in the first place?

It may be hard, Dog, but maybe you should just ask her to sit down and talk about it seriously.
With an open mind, ask her why she doesn't like the bald head on you.  Without getting offended by her answer, explain to her that being shaved bald is viewed completely different by the masses, than it is by her generation.  We are not neo-nazis and we don't hate everybody (just an example, not assuming that she thinks we're nazis  :))  Then give her the reason why you do it, which I know you have before, but it may be better accepted in that moment.
I then would even go as far to telling her that you are part of a supportive community on the internet, and that we all know about the battle you're going through, and we help eachother out when we're seeking that needed confidence.  This will hopefully let her realize how much her comments are affecting you.
As hard as it can be, just remember to not come back with any fighting words.  It will show maturity, and that you're serious about your decision.

It sounds like a "let's hold hands, everything is groovy" way to go about things, but it may work.
Whatever you choose to do, just remember your relationship with her is bigger than any hairstyle you have, and you'll be just fine in the long run.

I know she is old fashioned and back then shaving your head was "bad."  But if she could take a real look at me, she would see that my head is perfectly shaped for being bald and having no hair allows people to focus on my handsomeness!!!

Can you put her in a retirement home?
I knew I was going bald when it was taking longer and longer to wash my face

Hey Dog,

I totally understand what you are going through.  My parents both didn't like it.  I started consistantly shaving my head 10 years ago, when I was 37.  Prior to that my mom would note that I was losing hair.  She even said that maybe I should get a toupee if I lost more hair or get a transplant.  My dad, who was quite thinning said, "Marshall, it looks like hell".  So I had NO support in the shaved head area.  Since then, I have grown out the hair a few times.  The first time was due to pressure.  The others were just because I wanted to.  I have found that the more I keep it shaved, the less pleas I get to grow it back.  I have found that having a firm answer and being your own person is key, while being loving and respectful is also necessary.  I have now had my head shaved continously for 4 years now.  I no longer get comments about growing it back.  That might change if I grew it back then shaved it again.  So I don't think I will grow it back unless my mom was at her deathbed.  My dad is no longer a issue as he passed away in 1999.  I did get one plea from a female friend (thankfully she is NOT my girlfriend....too controlling) to grow it back.  She tried to imply that I was not honoring my mother by keeping it shaved.  She used the Bible to guilt me into growing it back.  I told her that I know the voice of God well enough that He can tell me if I am to grow it back.  I am telling you this to let you know that there can be all sorts of weird manipulation to make one grow their hair back.  So stick to your guns dude!     O0

A few of my religious friends tossed the ol' "The body is a temple" bit at me. :(  My reply was simple:  "You are absolutely right!  I just want the top of my temple to SHINE!!!"  That comeback leaves them speechless every time! O0 O0 O0
