Did you have a plan after high school/college?
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:01:53 AM »
I'm not a spontaneous, go with the flow, spur of the moment type of guy.  I like to have plans and recently I've been trying to think of my "after college life plan (if such a thing exists)" because I'm afraid of facing the real world.  Right now, I just live at home and I don't have to worry about rent, food, and other bills.

Currently, I'm a senior in college and I am majoring in Finance, a subject that I hate.  To make it short and to the point, I was undecided about what I wanted to do in college, I picked business after having to be forced to declare a major, and then I didn't like/ heard bad stuff about most of the business type of degrees so I just picked Finance.

During my days in college, I've helped out a few people with studying.  I taught this 1 guy accounting,  I helped a girl memorize a chart by telling her things that had absolutely nothing to do with what was in the chart (you know like "my very educated mother just served us nine pizzas = mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune, pluto).  I also helped people in other subjects and recently I've been helping a girl learn english because she came from another country.  Teaching was something that was in the back of my mind, but I didn't actually go for it.  Now, I realize its not about how much money I make, its about doing something that I will enjoy and I know its not going to be Finance.

I feel forced to get a finance degree since I'm 2 semesters away from obtaining it.  So I will just suck it up, study hard, and pass the classes to obtain that degree.  But after that, is where my plan takes place.  I'm thinking about going back to college and getting a degree in education.  Hopefully, I can live at home for a few more years (my mom is cool so I doubt she will have a problem with that... heck she would miss me if I'm gone), and then I can continue to work at walmart for awhile longer so I can continue putting money into my savings.

So I will be living at home till I'm about 25-26 and then I will hopefully enjoy teaching and I will be able to make enough money to have a decent standard of living.  Did you all ever have plans as to what you would do after school/college?  And does my plan sound good?

I think I would also like being a teacher because:

-They have weekends off
-They have summers off and get paid for it
-They go home at like 4 or earlier (If I teach elementary school.. right?)
-If I don't feel like working, I can show a movie
-I'm guessing good health benefits since they work for the state?

If teaching is what you want to do, dog, then go for it.  You don't want to spend the next 40+ years doing something that you're not happy doing. And going for a second degree shouldn't take you another four years; many of the credits from your finance degree can probably be applied towards your education degree, so it may not take as long as you think.

Teaching is definitely a good choice if you have a passion for it, and the summer vacation is probably the most enviable part for those of us who aren't teachers!  And I expect Razor's right about your courses transferring to the second degree.  I know at the university where I live, it's mandatory to have a degree before you can even apply to the faculty of Education -- and that translates into a higher salary for those teachers that those that went to other colleges/universities.  Not saying that it'll be the same for you, but education does tend to pay...

As a response to the original question, I don't know if "plan" would be the right word for it.  That sounds like I had some ultimate goal in mind.  I left high school intending to go the university for a double degree in Computer Science and Chemistry.  After my first year I changed that to drop the Chem part.  In my third year I decided to minor in Calculus.  After convocation, I worked for the man who'd hired me for my summer jobs at the startup software company he'd created in my last few months at school.

And  two years later I quit and went back to college to get a diploma in theatre.  Not something I would have thought would happen when I was back in high school, that's for sure.

I believe teachers start at $30,000?  Thats enough for me to survive on, since I don't buy much... but then again I have no idea how much rent, food, and bills will be  :*)).  These are the classes (it includes my finance courses).  As you can see, I got a lot of "NO's" for requirement met.  OMG

Looks like most of the "NO" ones are teaching related though.

I know, I know, thats why I said I will be in school for like 3 more years.  My finance courses only helped me met the general education requirements, so I got a lot more school to do  :(.  It feels like I will never get out of here!! I should have already gotten a degree since I've been going to school since Fall 2004  ;D.

I had a very definite plan for life from school onwards.
However, for various different reasons I didn't follow that plan.
So far life has been good to me.  I've worked hard at whatever I ended up doing and now have a great job, a wonderful home and the most fantastic family.
Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it.

Is it possible to get a Master's Degree in education with your bachelor's in Finance?  If so, that would be a quicker route.

It's good to weigh your options and direction thoughtfully....nothin' wrong with that...

Ya still need to be "flexible" for "fate" to steer you, if that's your belief.....I prefer Providence.

"In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." Proverbs 16:9

"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." Proverbs 19:21
