O.K. folks I here to say that as of today I am going COLD FRIGGIN' TURKEY to stop smoking....Don't know if I can do it, but I need to, Badly. I might be single by this time next month, but I'm also starting a walking program to help with the cravings I know i'm going to have. Yea I know WALKING? My knees won't take me trying to run at any pace. If you have quit smoking let me know how you did it......

Have a little talk with fr8, he made that very same decision and I'm sure he could
give you some pretty valuable information.

I quit smoking about a year and 8 months ago.
I was sick (yet again) with a cough and had had enough.
It's great, I don't hack up lougies, my sinus aren't messed up all the time, I can walk for 5 miles no problemo and my hands don't smell like butt.
You want to know the big secret to quitting? Don't put a cigarette in you mouth and light it.
Thats it.
Your body only has physical withdrawls for a few days after quitting.
After that it's all a mental game.... nothing more.
Taking up walking is a great idea. Keeps your mind off the cigs, and you'll actually be able to feel the good quitting is doing to you over time as you can breathe again deeply and fully without coughing up gooey tan LOUGIES!!!

Good luck! I quit smoking when my first daughter was born. Didn’t want her to grow up with second hand smoke around.
I was scared of the cravings but it wasn’t too bad. Every time you feel like smoking, do something else. Walk around the block, do 50 push-ups if you’re home, and so on. Cravings go away with physical activity. And you don’t gain weight and end up in better shape than before.
If that’s not an option, make a note each time you resist a craving and reward yourself later with some activity you like.
Hope that helps.

I've not been categorically HOOKED....dabbled here and there...
But one thing that helped me think differently about smoking was when my doctor said that smoking is simply committing suicide on the installment plan......YIKES
Best of damn luck....and remember, yer not looking for perfection.....if something should happen......don't self-loath and just throw in the towel.....
get back at it, PERIOD.

This Labor Day will mark my 1 year anniversary.
This is the 3rd and final time that I have quit smoking, first time was for almost 5 years, second for about 6 months and now this one will be forever.
Each time you 'quit' it gets harder and harder... and that is what helped me get through it this time, knowing that I do NOT want to go through that hell again. For me the bad cravings lasted about a week, then you progressively think about it less and less and just the smell of it starts to annoy you (it smells terrible when you don't smoke).
Trust me, if I can do it - ANYONE can.
To this day I could go for one now and then, especially sitting around the fire having a few beers... but after 10 seconds or so the craving disappears and life is good again.
Try thinking of it this way...
You're not quitting, you're just a non-smoker now.
Also, if you do drink beer and eat like crap (like I do) try eating healthy and lay back on the alcohol for at least a couple weeks, it really helps.
One last tip... When you think about it, the part of smoking you enjoy is probably the relaxation it gives you. Guess what? That isn't the cigarette, it's the slow, deep breaths you take when smoking! Try it next time you have a craving, just inhale slow and deep like you would if you were inhaling, heck, hold your fingers in front of your mouth if you have to (like you're holding one)... Feels GREAT and you're not smoking.
You'll be fine... a week goes faster than you think, after that it's a mind game and constant decision not to light up. The reward of not doing it is awesome and will be with you for the rest of your life.

Hey slyinglide. First off congrats on deciding to become smoke free.

Notice I didn't say "giving up" or "quitting". That's because you are not giving up or are you quitting anything you are simply becoming a non-smoker. Nicotine is the most addictive drug known to man and due to the chemical influence it has on the brain, one of the most difficult to kick.
As you can see from my ticker, I have only been smoke free for 20 days. I went Cold Turkey as well. I will tell you that the cravings are the worst the first week. A lot less the second week and dramatically drop there after. One of the things that I did during the first week was to frequent places where I had never smoked. For me that was the local library. Since I had never smoke in that location, it was easier to combat any craving I might experience while I was there. I also chewed up several packets of sugar-free mint gum during the first 2 weeks. When a craving hits you, take a couple of very deep breaths, pop a stick of chewing gum in your mouth and wait 10 minutes before acting on that craving. Chances are the craving will have dissipated by the end of the 10 minutes and you will continue to be smoke free.
Again I congratulate you on your decision. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions or just want to chat. If you’re thinking about lighting up, PM me first. My best to you in this endeavor.

My dad sucked on peppermints and atomic fireballs when he had cravings. He's been smoke free for a few years now.

It will get better Bro! I know how you feel! I wished I never started smoking as well. Just remember that once you get throught the first couple of weeks it will be a lot easier! I will warn you of the smoking dreams though. Believe me you will have them and they will seem so real!
Keep up the good work. You will sleep better soon. PM me if you need any encouragement.
