Gangster flicks
« on: July 28, 2008, 06:49:02 PM »
I've just watched The Untouchables (great movie) which led me to wonder, what are my Sly family's favourite Gangster movies? Mine are:

The Godfather trilogy
Once Upon A Time In America
(and I don't know if this counts)  Reservoir Dogs

how bout you guys?

The Untouchables and the Godfather films are also favorites of mine -- along with Good Fellas.

The Lovely Mrs. Schro's Aunt & Uncle are mentioned in the book "Casino".

Like all the other SBG's...
Love all the Godfather flicks....
Good Fellas
The Untouchables

Yeah, Donnie Brasco was good.

If you're into reading about the mafia, read "Bound by Honor" by Bill Bonanno (1999). One of the major mafia families of the 20th century. A great read and (if not 100% factual), gave some interesting theories in the shooting of JFK, the Cuban Missle Crisis, and the combined ticket of JFK and LBJ.

One movie that gets overlooked when mafia movies are discussed (and maybe it's a stretch to call it gangster) is "Year of the Dragon". It dealt with Chinese mafia (the "Triads") and starred Mickey Rourke (1985). Check it out.

Road to Perdition.......... it stars Tom hanks in a very unusual role for him. My 89 year old Aunt highly recommended it.

Chalk up one more for the Godfather series.   But like Ben, I love the old black and white classics too, Cagney was great in Angels with Dirty Faces.

Once Upon A Time In America

how bout you guys?

I haven't seen Once Upon a Time in America in years.  I even bought a copy on DVD last year and put it on the shelf.  I'll have to set aside a day in the near future to watch it.  It runs almost four hours.

I love the Godfather Trilogy, but my fav is still Goodfellas.

I will go with Godfather's I and II. If you know the movie, you know where I got my quote.

Gotta go with Donnie Brasco, Good Fella's, Once Upon a Time in America.
I also love the British gangster films like Lock, Stock and also Snatch.
