New Sly Gal
« on: July 20, 2008, 12:18:30 PM »
Hi, all—

I just joined the site Friday and posted over at the women's corner and have been overwhelmed at how open-minded and welcoming the community has been. I was prodded to post an intro, so here 'tis.

I first buzzed my head back in my mid 20s. I just woke up one morning with a really powerful urge to do it, so without thinking much about it—which was probably a good thing; I might have talked myself out of it!—I got dressed, walked to a drugstore and bought some clippers, then came home and buzzed, almost as if I was in a trance. I was working my way through college as a waitress at the time, so that night I went in to work wondering whether I still had a job—these are the sorts of questions I might have used to talk myself out of it! I managed to keep my job, and the funny thing was, my tips went up! I think customers automatically expected a bad attitude when they saw a woman with a shaved head, so when I turned out to be friendly I got points for being extra-friendly and got tipped accordingly! It was sweet. Another bonus was that I rode a motorcycle and didn't have to worry about helmet hair anymore!

I kept my hair buzzed for a couple of years, then grew it back to a short cut. But I always kind of missed it. Flash forward to last year, when I was having kind of a rough time in my life, and I remembered how happy I had been when I buzzed. And it wasn't just about being in my 20s; I just really like both the way I look with a buzzed head and the weekly ritual of buzzing. My question this time was whether I could still pull off the look at 40, but then I just said screw it and went for the happiness factor. I'm glad I did. I've had it buzzed this time around for a little over a year now, and I don't see any urge to grow my hair in the near future—ha, I came to this site for advice on new clippers!

It's hard to explain why it makes me so happy, but I know a lot of it has to do with the fact that every time I buzz my hair I'm affirming my own choices and rejecting other people's ideas about what I'm supposed to look like. I've found at 40 that I care a whole lot less about what other people think than about what works for me, and it's an awesome feeling. And the lack of helmet hair still comes in handy since I'm now bicycle-commuting to work—doing my part to stick it to the gas speculators.

A SBG's head shines so other SBG's always have the opportunity to see the reflection of how good they look!

Welcome Chica!  Thanks for joining our community.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

Disregard rude or nonsensical remarks from "The Joker". Welcome to the site, and you look great with your hair very short.

Welcome Chica!

I think it looks real nice on you!

I've seen quite a few buzzcut chicks up here in the "Hippy Northwest"...

Seems like it goes perfect with that whole laid back vibe...

Keep it nice and stubbly..it's a good fit! ;)
