HDTV/DVD question
« on: July 19, 2008, 10:51:16 AM »
I got my new high-def TV and also got an upscaling DVD player (thanks for the suggestion, BaldRob!).  I've got everything hooked up and working -- almost.  When watching DVDs, occasionally, it cuts out for a few seconds and the screen displays  "Searching For Signal".  It always comes back within a few seconds.  I've had this happen with two different DVDs, though it did not happen with a couple of DivX files that I downloaded from the internet and burned to a disk.  I'm using an HDMI connection, and it's connected securely at both ends.  Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

This only occurs w/ the DVD not w/ your cable/satellite or off air program content?  If so, it could be a defect in a disk, or w/ the upvert in the unit.

Yes, it's just with the DVD.  I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my HDMI cable.

That wouldn't make sense if the downloaded files work, what definition are the burned disks in, check the unit it may be that the unit is having issues w/ upverting older commercial disks.  Have you called tech support?  I'm thinking that the unit is having issues in the upvert process and it stops sending signal while it resolves the upvert process.

I just got off the phone with Tech Support.  They said the unit is defective.  Amazon is sending me a new one.

Thanks for your help, saintc.

Help, I don't think so, I had problems like that with the DVR unit I got first from DishTV, and I spent a lot of time working on it until that conclusion was arrived at, unfortunately it was SuperBowl Sunday w/ lots of people ready to watch in HD on our new set and the unit totally CR*PPED out at 4:15p, not just intermitent "no signal" it became constant, fortunately we had a second working unit in the upstairs TV room, but it was CROWDED.  Hope you're enjoying all the stuff on the set.  Are you cable, satellite or off air for your broadcast programing?

Digital cable.  The picture is fantastic -- I don't even care what I'm watching at this point; I'm just captivated by the clarity.

Years ago, I'm not sure if I was even born yet, my great uncle was having a Super Bowl party with a lot of people coming over, and the TV went on the blink that morning.  In those days, there was nothing open on a Sunday, so even if he'd been prepared to go out and buy a new set, he wouldn't have been able to.  They had to move the party to a neighbor's house.  And here's the clincher -- the exact same thing happened the following year.
