MPB's Resent BBC'ers
« on: July 15, 2008, 11:34:24 AM »
After almost 2 weeks of returning to sly-ness, I'm still loving it and can't see why I'd ever go back to hair again. My friends and family are so used to me lopping off a full head of hair whenever the mood strikes me, that nobody even reacts.

It's funny - the only negative reaction I get when I go sly comes from guys who are losing their hair (and of course haven't been man enough to go sly). Their reactions are always pretty strong and angry. "Dude, how can you shave off a full head of hair? I'd kill to have my hair back." "You're an idiot. You should enjoy hair while you still have it!" etc..

Of course I always tell them that they need to learn to accept their own hair loss and that BALD is better than BALDING. ANd I also explain that I now have absolutely no fear of losing my hair, because I look so good rocking the sly!  O:O

Anybody else get  grief from the MPB's who just don't get it?

Based on some of the gawd-awful combovers I've seen they simply don't have a clue.  :o

There's a guy at my gym that I always get dirty looks from.  He's balding in a bad way and refuses to shave his head. (I've given him a card).  I saw him the other night at a restaurant and again he gave me a dirty look.  I just chuckled as he was giving me the dirty look.

Hmmm...

I don't know what to say...

Well, I do - I just don't know how to phrase it.

For me, I lived with losing my hair for quite a number of years before shaving it off and to be honest, it's not for everyone.

I mean it's great that I've found the sly life and it works for me, but by no means do I feel 'superior' to others who choose not to do so, I've been there. Lots of times I wished I could be that white guy that pulls off the bald head, almost as many times as I wished I was that guy with the full head of hair.

That's the thing... you hold on to that hope.

I hung onto that hope until I honestly just let myself go because of it... As sad or pathetic as it may sound, for a large number of years my hair meant a lot to me and I spent a lot of time styling it. Something I'd still be doing today had it not been for male pattern baldness.

Now, that said... once I shaved my hair off and went 'sly' it did change my life, for the better. I started caring about my appearance again, bought new clothes, new products, etc. I spend more time with family and friends because I have regained the self confidence I once had.

For me, I can still understand both sides... and hope I'll never lose that. If someone comes up to me and asks questions about it, fine... but I'm not going to go around telling anyone they'd be better off shaving their head. Sure, I might think it... but who am I to judge?

For those losing their hair and are confident with it, that's pretty damn awesome in my book.

I'd like to think that look isn't so much against you being bald, rather a look of wishing they could do so... perhaps jealousy, thinking they won't pull it off so they are stuck dealing with it or getting some sort of work done.

There was one time, in the restroom nonetheless that my old boss (horseshoe to the max), asked what sparked the head shave. I told him my story and that I wasn't going to fight it, rather beat mother nature to the punch. Then I asked if he ever considered it... He just smiled and said his son thought about it, but for him, he liked the Ben Franklin look.

I've never gotten any attitude about it.  it is obvious from my shadow that I have a full head of hair.  I just like the look and enjoy the Sly Attitude that comes with it.  People tell me I look younger and better sly than with hair.

To MPB's that have a problem with me, I offer this:  Get Over It.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk but, if you guy's with heads full of hair had to go though it, well you'd understand.  I can see how it doesn't seem like a big deal and you can just shrug it off with a "get over it and shave it off" but it really does go a lot deeper than that, it's not really 'right' for an MPB to get mad at you for shaving your head with a full head of hair, but I can totally see how it would make someone feel, and can sympathize with anyone that does that, because I've been there.   It really is hard for a lot of guys when they lose their hair, I'm not trying to defend them and say that they have the right to be dicks about it all i'm saying is that I understand why they'd be dicks, that being said they really should just shave it off  O0

Sort of like the worst homophobes being closeted gays...

I actually did have someone with just as bad MPB as I have give me the "You should enjoy hair while you still have it!" line and retorted with "Are you enjoying yours?"

He got all thoughtful.

He still does the combover (and a really pathetic one to boot), but never gives me any crap anymore.

I guess I just don't get this business about 'enjoying hair'. Even when I had it I can't say that I enjoyed it.

Good point Red! Should not the expression be "enjoy your vanity"?

Not to say I'm any better... I'm quite vain about my glistening scalp!

Its just hair for crying out loud. Its not like it is some disfigurement or disease.

I understand the whole "coping" with MPB, and how some feel robbed of their youth/looks/vanity (I went through it too) but to get all stinky because someone shaves their head by choice and not by circumstance is pretty weak.

I think it is the same thing that is talked about here daily, some people just cant get over it and accept themselves for who they are so they carry a constant chip on their shoulder as a result. Some folks seem to  choose to have something to complain about always and even if God were to come down and magically give them a full head of hair it would be something else... "My hair is too thick now", "I have to spend too much time styling my glorious mane", "This didn't solve all my problems".

One of my best friends shaves down to a #0 and he has hair like George Clooney. He likes it for the same reasons everyone else does, its clean, no hassle and looks good.

Personally, I count my blessings... I have too many positives in my life to focus my attention on the few negatives...

OK guys, don't kick me out of the club.  I really think that if I had a full head of hair (not balding or a comb over) that I would never consider going SLY.  But, that's me.

But now, I embrace my SLYness with a full head of skin.

An interesting thing my gym teacher told me was that you always want what you don't have.

MPB guys can't grow their hair back, and guys with full heads of hair have the option to grow it or shave it, which could irritate some naturally MPB guys.

I empathize with guys dealing with MPB, really I do.  Like I mentioned earlier I have never had any attitude by MPB guys.  We ALL have things about ourselves that we would like to change or wish would be different. And no I am not going to spill everything here.  lol    If you didn't, I don't think you would be normal.  I have things about myself I am not totally happy about, but I get over it.
