iPod problem
« on: July 13, 2008, 06:27:30 PM »
Occasionally my iPod will stop suddenly in the middle of a track and skip ahead to the next one.  The same song will stop at the same point every time it is played.  It happened again a couple of days ago.  The track played perfectly in iTunes on my PC, but not on the iPod itself.  I tried everything, from re-syncing to restoring the factory settings on the iPod and re-copying my whole library back onto it.  Nothing worked and in the end, I had to delete the track from iTunes and re-ripping it from the original CD.

Tonight it just happened again with another track.  Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a quicker and easier way to fix the problem without having to delete the track and ripping it again from the CD?

Files get corrupted. Sounds like that's what you're dealing with. It happens.

One thing that helps is making sure to keep the device away from magnetic fields. that includes cell phones, televisions, speakers, etc.

Hi Razor!

Are you using Windows Media Player?  If so, you might want to check how fast you are ripping cd's.  If you try to save a lot of drive space, that could make some of your tracks act goofy.

You could be right.  I could have it too close to my cell phone.  But why doesn't the problem self-correct when I re-sync?  The copy on my PC is fine.

Because when you re-sync the devices only look for any files that are new or changed. Even though the data in the file is corrupted the information about it (size, date, etc) looks the same so nothing is changed during the re-sync.

If you deleted the file from the device, and then did the re-sync, it should load the file from the PC again.

I don't think it will let me do that.

Why not? You can easily delete a song from the iPod.

How?  I thought the only way was to delete it from iTunes and re-sync.

You can access it as a standard removable drive, find the offending track, and then delete it like any other file.

Razor, is the song in MP3 format or the iTunes format?

Ok, copy that file to another directory on your computer.  Then using iTunes, delete the file out of the playlist.  Then re-sync your iPod.  Copy the file back into the directory, add it  back to the playlist, then re-sync your iPod again.

Now that sounds like it should work!  I'll try it if I have the problem again.  Thanks, Tyler.

You're welcome!  It should work since I had to do this with my wife's iPod.
