Bald Guyz Shave Gel Review
« on: July 11, 2008, 01:00:32 PM »
First of all..... Thanks to Howard at BaldGuyz products for the free samples he sent for his company survey!

I don't mean to poison the pot by reviewing the product now, so if you don't want my review to slant your own review, STOP READING NOW, until after you've reached your own conclusions about the product.

I've used the BaldGuyz shave gel for (5) days now and here are my impressions and ratings (scale of 1-10, 10 is high):

Slickness - WOW! This is a super slick product. I've been shaving my head for just over a year and this gel is the slickest product I've used to date. This products rates a full fledged (10) for slickness.

Scent - This product has a GREAT scent. It is a mildly fruity/citrus scent..... I can't really quite put my finger on it. The scent is a nice change from the menthol of many products. My wife LOVED the smell when i asked her to give my head a sniff after shaving.
This product rates a (10) for it's scent.

Shave closeness - I use a Headblade with triples to shave my head and a Gillette Sensor with doubles for the face. No matter..... I got an equally close shave with both razors. The closeness of the shave is excellent.  This product rates a (10) for shave closeness.

Latherability - Is that even a word??? Well the product is a clear gel but when you begin rubbing, it turns into sort of a cream. Very nice and clings nicely. It can dry up a little quickly but just a few drops of water and a quick rub and it re-lathers nicely. Even after it dries up a bit, your head will remain very slick. This product rates a solid 8 for latherability.

Packaging - I'm not a big fan of the tube....and this really is a minor thing. Since the product is water based and thus a little runny it tends to build up in the cap just a bit if you stand the tube up (so lay it down dummy!). Hold the tube sideways a bit as you squeeze out the product so you don't waste any of this great product. I'd much prefer a stand up type bottle......just a personal preference.
This product rates a 7 for packaging.

Overall impression and comments - This is a great, top quality product. It will become a regular part of my regular head shaving routine. Even with my minor complaint about the packaging this product still averages out to a rating of (9)..... and a very solid (9) at that.
I probably haven't used as many different shave products as many of you guys but of the ones I've used, this product is right at the top of my list. I love the BaldGuyz shave gel!!!!

                             Thanks again Howard..........

I just got mine in the mail today. So, I only have one shave to rate it on.

But ... I used it at the sink, and got probably the best sink shave I've ever had. I, too, like the smell - the menthol irritates my eyes sometimes, but this was non-irritating.

Tomorrow, I'll try it in the shower ... which is usually a closer shave for me.

Great review, Mike.  I also love the stuff.  I think I may have to start ordering this stuff. I only wish I could find it in stores where I live.

My only complaint is that after I lather up, this stuff is so slick, I have a hard time getting it all rinsed off my hand to be able to get a good grip on my razor.  This stuff is really slick.

Thanks for the sample, Howard.

Rick-

I know here in the east... Walgreens and CVS carry it. I haven't seen it at Wally World. Maybe Howard can let us know the retail outlets that carry it.

Was going to start a new thread, but I may as well just add my $.02 here...

First shave was disappointing, but I think it was either too much product (wasn't expecting it to come out so fast) or the lack of time I had (was anxious to try it).

Since then all shaves have been wonderful and more along the lines of what I was expecting.

Like mentioned, this stuff is like ice for slickness, I can't imagine a product beating it in this category. It does 'dry up' and become a little tacky, but a little splash of water brings it right back to life (also mentioned previously).

In all honesty I can pretty much only echo what's already been said, so I'll stop here on the mens product and give some insight on the ladies end.

My wife is a tough sell, and if she can get by with a $.99 product she will, even if it means a little sacrifice. That said, my read on what she said made me think she would lean towards purchasing this. She uses the Gillette Venus, which is already a huge plus for shaving, but said this made the shave that much more effortless. She's never had much issue with nicks/cuts and that held true with this product as well. She liked the scent, wasn't overbearing and it felt nice on her legs she said. She also liked that she could see where she had shaved (her other product has a thick foam to it).

There wasn't a single real negative to report... great products, even for my sensitive skin.

Keep up the great work, and thank you for this opportunity. I'll also be adding the review to my Bald Club For Men site where I keep a litle journal of all the products I use.

Now, if only I could find this locally... The added shipping cost and inability to buy spontaneously to have 'today' is about it's only downfall for me.

Survey sent today.

As for my personal review... I can echo everything thsat wa said here... HOWEVER... I had issues developing a decent lather with this gel. I think it's because Phoenix has some of the HARDEST water in the country. I was able to get a nice lather with a shaving brush though.

My other issue is how runny it was... i realize it's a water based formula, but some sort of thickener would be appreciated.

Just a quick point in that the Shave Gel is designed NOT to later so that one can see where they have already shaved. As for the "runniness" of the product, you need to get used to using it as this formula is unlike any other you have used.

Keep the comments coming!

I can agree with that -- in the shower I put it on shaving cream first and then lather up the rest of me so the hair can soften -- it wasn't thick enough to stay on my scalp or face and it became quite runny and thin.

I tell ya, the more I use this stuff - the more I love it.

Without this, the HeadBlade would be unusable for me, thank you!

PS
For those who haven't read, I'm one of the few that simply could not use the HeadBlade without getting nicks and even pretty bad cuts. Now I'm can use the HeadBlade in turbo mode and (knock on wood) so far have had 0 issues.

Hey Pshrynk,

Perhaps you need to change the way you groom the head when you use this product as it is totally different from anything you have used before. You do not have to let it sit on your head to soften the whiskers, you do not have to lather it up. Just wash and scrub the head or face, apply a small amount of the gel to the wet skin and away you go.

I would suggest experimenting a bit to see what works best for you, but remember this is not the normal shave cream of foam. It is clear, slick and lubricious (yes that is a word) so it appears runny. Use a small amout at a time to get used to the consistancy.

I made the mistake (accident actually) of using too much the first time. A little goes a LONG way... About a dime size portion is enough for my head and face, and that is probably a tad much.

What a difference!  8) O0

I've been using it now for a week or more, and have to buy a stamp to send my survey.

The dome hasn't been this smooth after shaving for a very long time.

One question: What's the difference between the men's and women's shave gel? I don't have a significant other, and so have tested them both shaving my head ... I don't notice a significant difference -- but for my $0.02, they both work very well.

Hey, Padre, I guess you could say the "Big Guy" is your significant other.....but guess he doesn't need the shave gel. :*))

Sorry, I just couldn't resist....
