STu you said the same thing I was gonna say...The Shining.  I remember that back in the 80's and I watched it as I was babysitting for these people who had a two story house.  I wouldnt let the little ones go to their rooms.  I made them sleep with me on the floor....lol

The Shining, hands down.  I still can't leave the shower curtain closed, and that was almost 20 years ago that I first saw it.

Black Christmas (with Margot Kidder) was also pretty scary.

The Exorcist did nothing for me -- the only time I jumped was when my friend's dad turned on the food disposal in the sink halfway through.  I'd have probably jumped even if we were watching the news.

May not be a movie, but the scariest show I have ever seen was BARNEY the Friggin Dinosaur.

The original black and white movie(not the fairly recent remake) "The Haunting" directed by Robert Wise.  I saw that when I was five and scared the crap out of me. The movie didnt use a lot of special effects(it was made in 1964, it plays to your imagination and to me, that makes a great movie and story.  The movie is based on Shirley Jacksons book by the same name.  Jackson also wrote the famous short story that is often required reading in high schools, "The Lottery", which is frightening also.

For me it is a film called The Changeling with George C. Scott.   It is a film that deals with a murder and the haunting of a house.  No gore and blood, just good old fashion psych out scare scenes.  Still can't watch it without getting a chill or two.

There are 2 that I rate as the scariest I've ever seen "The Exorcist" and "Night of the Living Dead." Both make it difficult to fall asleep, even all these years later (and I have all of the Romero "Living Dead" series on DVD, having turned into a "Living Dead" geek.)
