buzzing ever closer
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:36:54 PM »
hey all

36 year old guy who knew this day was coming sooner or later given my family history. when my barber, only the second that i have ever had, finally decided to retire at the age of 76, i started buzzing my hair myself. once a week and dropping down a notch each month. will be dropping down to the last one next week.

still haven't decided if i will take the complete plunge come august or not. it's not vanity holding me back. in fact i never liked my hair, even when it was thick. it was wavy, and not in a good way. rather, in a perpetual bed head sort of way. would never consider hair tonics or surgery, just always felt they were a waste of money.

my big hang up is the actual act of shaving. i hate shaving. hate it. hate it. hate it. hate it.  it's why i started growing a beard in the 8th grade. other than school pictures, and an office job i had back in the early 90's, i've pretty much been shave free. haven't shaved my face in over three years when i accidently gouged my beard while trimming it.

i have a buddy who has been shaving his head for about 5 years now, and he's the one who recommended that gradually buzz my way down. i almost took the plunge in january, but another shaved friend suggested that i wait until summer to give my noggin time to adjust before the uber dry pennsylvania winters.

been wearing hats more often the last two or three years  for winter and sun protection. the worst was that stage where my hair was too thin to offer any protection from the sun, but was still too thick for the spray sunscreen to work. i was pondering formulating a hair conditioner, rinse with water proof sunscreen mixed in.

by the way, as i mentioned on one of the hats threads, i would really appreciate any tips on locating hats for big heads. i wear a 7 3/4 - 8 depending on the hat. finding leather and felt hats for winter is no problem, but trying to find hats for the summer that fits is a bit tough other than full blown cowboy and panamas.

anyway, i googled my way across this site and have been lurking and reading a bit, checking out the reviews and routines. going to start trying some different razors and shaving gels/creams/lotions for trimming around my beard and neck.

i've also been scoping out comments on beard styles whilst shaving and products for a matte finish. i just know i'll be tempted with the potential of my cans of spray fixative for drawings. ;)

once i get another webcam, i'll post a pic of the latest buzz.

cheers

Hi, Manatree.  Shaving your head is much, much easier than shaving your face.  Give it a try and see how it goes.  You can always go back to the buzz if it's not to your liking.

Welcome manatree.

I'm with you on the face shaving.  I have very sensitive skin and shaving my face 2 days in a row hurts and my skin becomes irritated (that was until I tried shave secret AND shaving gel  :))

As for head shaving though, the skin is much tougher.  I shave it daily or 2x daily without any problem.  I know a lot of the guys on here are addicted to having a smooth scalp and shaving daily actually becomes enjoyable.

Try the 30 day head shave challenge, you won't be disappointed.

Ditto on the fact shaving your head is easier than the face...

I'm obsessed with a perfect smooth dome...

if I get the face half way there , I'm happy!

Shave it smooth bro...you'll dig a slick bald head!

Welcome!

Welcome man!

I can second or third the statement that shaving your head is much easier than shaving your face. I had major problems shaving my face, but my head can be shaved with ease.

Give it a shot, you can always go back to buzzing it.

Ditto manatree! I always hated the act of face shaving, but once I switch gear and headshaved, I found it to be somewhat enjoyable. The razor actually glides along the scalp. Doesn't rip and tug as it does on the mug. Give it a try, you'll see what I mean.

Cheers, Ben

Welcome to SBG's manatree, glad you decided to join in. I have to agree with my bro's, shaving the noggin' is much more enjoyable than shaving the face. Give it a shot and you'll see. Most of us look forward to that shave.

Check out the headshaving and product sections, and try different things to see what works for you.

Enjoy the forum.
