New and needing advice
«
on:
June 11, 2008, 07:52:34 AM »
Hello to all, I've been checking out the site for awhile now and decided it was time to join as you all seem to be a really cool and supportive group. I'm a 40 year old male who has had thinning hair on top for some time now and I'm finally at the point of buzzing it off! Don't quite know if I'm ready to go Sly yet but I would appreciate advice and I guess would also like to know what the ladies think as well. I'm going to try and post a picture soon. Thanks!

Hi Joe,
Well I guess the fact that you have been looking round here for a while means you know what the answers are going to be!
I am yet to see a guy who looks worse sly than balding. In the main it seems to suit most people and everyone on here seems pretty happy with it - so give it a go, you might just like it!

Hey Joe and welcome!
Buzz it down to a 1 guard and see what you think... give it a little while to sink in and then break out the ol razor and take it all off. Give it the 30 day trial run and see what you (and others think). Just be prepared for some good natured ribbing...

Welcome! BRob and Argyle have given you some great advice. Only thing I will add is, no matter what you do, give it at least 30 days before you decide whether or not you'll go completely SLY, or keep it buzzed.

That's basically it in a nutshell, my friend.

time to buzz it down dude...and sly if you're feeling real ballsy that day!
Go for it...it's not like no one around you has not ever seen a bald guy in their presence....
You'll see, life is WAY better sly anyways!!!!!

Joe, I might also add that since you have joined the 40-something club, you have the right to do whatever the heck you want. Buzzing your hair down will help you see how it will look when it's all gone. Plus it might give you the final push to shave it clean. Post up some pics when you take the next step(s).

All good advice Joe. As a SLY Guy myself and new to the site all I can tell you is that I have gotten nothing but positive comments on my SLY look. Especially from the ladies.
Buzz it off and see how you like it.

Hi, Joe.
The easiest way is to go in stages. Get your hair buzzed as short as you feel comfortable with. I'd suggest a #2 (1/4") maximum. Get it buzzed to the same length at least every two weeks and then when you feel you're ready, take it down to the next length. #1 (1/8") will grow back to #2 within a week. Once you're used to a #1, you can either buzz it to #000 or #0000 - there isn't much difference between the two and both will leave you looking very bald. Once you go shorter than a #1 you might as well just shave it and get it over with.
You'll always feel a little nervous when you're going down to the next length, but the important thing to remember is that it always grows back to the prior length within a week. Shaved bald will grow back to #1 within a week. A week isn't a terribly long time to have to live with a haircut if you don't like it.

Joe, welcome aboard! A lot of us on here started by gradually buzzing it closer and closer. Then, when you do shave, it's not such a shock to you or your friends/family. Plus, like RazorX said, if you don't like it you can have it back to a #1 in a week. Keep us posted.
