New head shaver:what do I need?
« on: June 10, 2008, 03:32:12 PM »
Hey guys. I was wondering which products are, in your opinion, absolutely necessary for a good, clean and shiny scalp? Right now I'm just shaving it and using right aid brand moisturizers. But I'm having trouble getting a really close and smooth shave. Going against the grain doesn't get that tiny stubble off alot of the time and getting it off takes a lot of passes and time...and it irritates my skin. I'm using a gillette fusion manual

So what lotions, shaving products, creams, techniques etc. would you recommend? I'm heading out soon to pick up the following:

Coppertone sports sunblock
St. Ives apricot scrub
baby oil (headshaver.org mentioned it as a good shaving oil)
Aveno positively smooth shaving gel

Would you recommend other products? I'm happy with my fusion, but would you recommend any daily/weekly/whatever routines for a new guy like myself aside from morning shave with a cold rinse and moisturizer twice a day (once after shave, another after I get home)?

Thanks,
Dan

dan:  check out the HEADSHAVING section of the forum on ROUTINES & do some research on what the other brothers R using.  i'm a fusion (manual) man & it gets me the smoooothest.

as far as products:  keep the st. ives apricot scrub on your list... however only use it 2-3 times a week on your noggin' because if U do it everyday it may cause your dome 2 have an irritated scalp.

buy the shave secret oil (only $3), headslick (7.99), and rubbing alcohol ($1) bottle, and a small travel sized spray bottle (2oz) (50cents)...all at wal-mart.

1.  jump in the shower

2.  apply hot water on noggin

3.  shave secret oil on noggin" 6-8 drops (or more)

4.  headslick on noggin'

5.  alcohol spray noggin'

6.  shave with fusion (manual)

7.  spray alcohol on razor after a few passes (do this several times) it cuts down on irritation

8.  cold water rinse

9.  ice cube rub

10.  pat dome dry

11.  apply TN DICKINSON'S witch hazel (can't remember price) or aloe vera gel

12.  ENJOY a slick, smooooth noggin.

extra>>> U might want 2 place the witch hazel or clear alow vera gel in fridge because it leaves a comfortin, cool feeling on the nogg'

hope this helps ya...

Yep, I've been through the routine thread and a lot of reviews and stuff but there is just no consensus on the best way. Which makes sense but I do have a limited income so I can't try it all   :o

Thanks for the tips. I have read quite a few people recommending headslick. Guess I'm not gonna find that in rightaid, huh  :P

Don't know about Rite Aid, but here in Chicago Walgreens and CVS usually carry Head Slick.

Can't go wrong with Shave Secret shaving oil under the HeadSlick, too.

Hey Dan,

Different products/routines work for different people. So I suggest trying a various routines and products before settling on a routine. You'll find one that works. I use King of Shaves Alpha Gel and I get a really great shave with that using the Headblade. I also soften up the hairs on my head in the shower with any old conditioner lying around. I let it sit for a couple minutes, rinse it off, then jump out and head over to the sink for a shave.

Hey guys!

Back from right aid and heres what I got:

Apricot scrub
baby oil
Vaseline aloe fresh (BTW this stuff stings, but my head feels so much softer and smoother)
Sheer Lotion sunscreen spf 45

And finally: I was incredibly surprised to find this little rightaid in Maine carrying: Headblades and Headblade products! I was tempted to pick up the headblade, but decided against it. I did get the headslick and the Headblade preshave gel. Forgot to pick up the spray bottle though. Also meant to look for fog-free mirrors. Oh well.

Dan

There is no consensus, because there's no one right way.  You have to experiment a little and find what works best for you.  It's not necessary to spend a fortune on products.  Use a good quality razor and good shaving cream/gel.  Don't skimp on those.  The only other products I use are St. Ives Apricot scrub once or twice a week, and a little witch hazel to keep the bumps away.

If you're not getting a close enough shave, try shaving a little later in the day if you can.  That gives the stubble a few more  hours to grow out and makes it easier for the blade to catch it all.

And yes, you will find Headslick in Rite Aid.

Dan, you should have picked up that Headblade bro. It's the best tool for the job.

Just like anything else, you have to experiment and see what works for you. Take some pointers from the headshaving and routine sections and apply them to yourself.

Headslick cream is one of the best around as many guys can attest.

It's harder to find, but if you can try Bald Guyz shave gel, this works just as well as Headslick.

You will eventually find a routine and rotation that works for you.

Good luck, and enjoy your "slydom".

The headblade has a bit of a learning curve to it. It honestly is best to learn with it when you 1st go sly... that way you don;t have to unlearn any of your bad habits.

As far as what products to use and what order... Your results may vary. You have a great resource here at your finger tips... read through what others have found that works and does not work for them. then incorporate it into your daily shave.

Yeah, I used the stuff this morning. Here's what I came up with

1. get in shower and wash up with hot water, make sure water is hot and washes over head alot
2. Use HB preshave gel.
3. Use rubbing alcohol and wait a few mins
4. quick rinse
5. Take a few drops of baby oil and rub it in
6. Apply HB headslick
7. Shave with the grain all the way around
8. reapply headslick if necessary and use short choppy strokes against grain
9. Cold water rinse
10. Dry razor and spray rubbing alcohol on
11. Get dressed and other normal stuff.
12. ice cube on head
13. apply lotion
14. Apply spf 45 sunscreen
15. ? ? ? ? ?
16 PROFIT!

Plan to use apricot scrub once a week on saturdays.

I think I may pick up the headblade next time I'm there. Also gonna get some HB headshine glossy cause I'm liking the shiny chrome dome  O0

Dan,

Here's my standard routine, now that I too have figured one out.  It's pretty straight forward:
1. Hop in shower, and use HeadBlade: Headwash
2. Headslick with HeadBlade (finishing passes with Fusion razor)
3. COLD water rinse
4. Bald Guyz Moisture Gel
5. Before I head out (lol...little joke there), one last pass with Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel (from the fridge) for a little extra shine....and it cools the head REAL nice as I head out.

Keep it sly......
