Wrong number

I keep getting phone calls from collection agencies looking for someone named Karen. I have no idea who she is; perhaps she had this phone number before I did, but I've had it for eight years and I'm still getting calls from people trying to track her down. I used to get a lot of messages on the answering machine but they stopped leaving them. When I get home, I can see calls from them logged on the caller ID.
When I happen to be home to take one of these calls, I try to explain that they've got the wrong number. They usually apologize and say they'll take my number out of their database. Sometimes the calls taper off for a while, but eventually they start up again. Someone called yesterday and we went through the whole routine and they said they wouldn't call again. Today when I got home, they were logged on my caller ID. Maybe they don't believe me when I say I don't know who she is. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make these annoying calls stop?

Your number is somewhere in their database; perhaps an old number for the customer or the number of a contact / reference / employer. Each time it changes agencies or collectors, they are going to try it again. All you can do is request they remove it. But good luck in getting it out permanently.

I've had the same problem. We've been in our house for 7 years and still get calls looking for people we don't know. Usually they call during the day when nobody is home. Usually it's an automated message asking for us to call a 1-800 number. I've called the number and told the agencies not to call back several times. It seems very odd to me that a collection agency would use an automated call-back system.

Yeah, I've had that happen, too. They don't ask you to call back, they insist upon it.
YOU MUST call this number by such-and-such a date to which I usually respond, "Oh, must I?" I tried ignoring them and tried calling back, waiting on hold and asking them to remove my number from their database. Nothing seems to work.

I actually had one today on my machine. My problem is that there are two Tim Bateman's here in Washington Indiana. Small town...only about 14000 people and our names are listed the same in the book. He gets my calls and I get his half the time. Its annoying because he is about 59 years old, rides a harley and has posed in PlayGirl.....go figure....

We used to have to deal with "Harassing Calls" problems at my old job all the time.
You call your service provider with 3 examples of the calls, so the number, time of call and duration (exact as possible), they then contact the service provider of the person calling you and basically tell them to stop or further action will be taken, then if it continues your service provider has to do it through the police.
Your service provider will have logs of all your incoming calls.
Usually stops very quickly.

Tell them that you've been lying to them all along and that you just kicked her out of the house because she's a stupid bitch. She can now be reached at (xxx) xxx-xxxx Fill in the x's with the number of your choice, to be funny you should make it an enemy.

When I get repeat wrong numbers, like three or more from the same number, I give them the full treatment, that sorry she/he's not here, she/he was convicted of manslaughter for stalking and killing a collector/whatever the person calling is. Something outrageous so that they should think, a rare talent, and stop. Generally they do, and I get a good laugh sometimes because of their inane responses.
