I stopped watching American Idol this year.
It finally turned the corner to being "Americas Cutest Singer"
The talent really gets weeded out early and it seems to be the cutest ones that get the votes. That dude with the dreads was pretty much crap compared to Shakizee (sp) and so many others... but obviously made it on the cute factor.
David Arculetta would have been booted in round 2 or 3 a couple seasons ago, just like that red head kid did a few years back.
Even my wife gave up on it this year and she watched every season religiously.

I gave up on it too Marz, too damn commercial. They wanted the cute ones like you mentioned, and the ones who would get them the ratings they craved so badly.

I have only really been watching this for the last 2 seasons, so I don't know all of those contestants. I will say that David Cook ought to win it this year. He is very talented, and extremely versatile. David Archuleta has an incredible voice, but I don't know how much commercial viability he has... the cuteness factor has definitely made him go far. Carly Smithson is also a great talent and should have been in at least the final 3. It is definitely a popularity contest because 'Dreadlocks Boy' should never have made it as far as he did... teenaged girls calling in obviously kept him in it. I did like Chris Daughtry last year. Had I been watching earlier seasons, I'm sure I would have liked Carrie Underwood... very talented indeed.

Not so talented. Carrie Underwood is the main reason I no longer listen to mainstream country radio. Her performance on last night's ACM awards show was an absolute disgrace:

If you have Comcast Digital Cable, their Music Choice channels have some good choices: a bluegrass channel, a classic country channel, and an Americana channel that I've been listening to a lot lately. They also have a "today's country" (marketing term for "pop") channel that I avoid. You can get a $10 audio cable to connect your cable box to your stereo so you can listen to the music without the TV being on all the time. I have mine hooked up to my Bose Wave Radio and it sounds terrific.

My Better Half is Idol-crazy. She records every episodes and watches it(Both the Australian AND American version of Idol). She was really upset when Aussie Matthew Johns was voted off the show.
Me, I cant stand the show. I dont watch it. I usually look at porn online when she is watching Idol.

I think that X Factor as it is now known over here has had its day in my book, the format is tired and the presenters have become charicatures of themselves. I read a great book by Ben Elton called Chart Throb which is a take on the Pop Idol format and a great read. I would recommend it if you can get hold of it in the US.

Musically ilike Chris Daughtry best, from a sheer coolness factor I liked Carly Smithson, and from the "I'd like to take a tumble with her" factor it's Katherine McPhee definetly.
