I met a Bald boy at Appleby's last night.........
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:29:43 AM »
Last night i took my wife and daughter to Appleby's for dinner. Sitting a few tables away from us was a woman with a girl about ten years old and a young boy that looked to be about thirteen or fourteen years old. The boy's head was as smooth as silk...... not hair on it. I thought that maybe he had been thru chemo.

Well after dinner, before we left the restuarant, I went to the rest room to wash my hands, etc.
As I walked down the hallway to the bathroom this same young boy was entering the rest room in front of me. i did my  thing and went to wash my hands at the double sink. As i was washing, this boy came to the sink next to me and began washing his hands. I looked at him and said, "you realize if anyone walks in right now their going to freak out don't you?". He said, "Oh yeah!" Man did we laugh. So i asked him if he had been sick and he said no, that he had a condition called alopecia and that he had lost all his hair when he was 6 years old. i asked how old he was now and he said 12. i asked if not having hair ever bothered him.  "No, never even think about it."

i said, "man that's awesome..... and it looks great for you". He said, "You too". And we laughed again as we left the rest room.

What a great kid............. i love when life gives you moments like these........

Great story Mike! What a wonderful kid, good on you for making him feel good.

I have a cousin with alopecia, lost it all at 8 years old. He is now 24.

That is so cool.  To him, it's just normal, no big deal.  I bet he's glad you asked about it instead of just assuming something or staring.

My daughter is like that with her hand.  To her, it's just normal.

Great story Mike!  I went to college with a guy that had Alopecia and lost all of his hair at an early age.  He's one of the guys that showed me that hair is not really a big deal as women loved to rub his head.

Kid sounds like he's wise beyond his years and will probably go far in life.  I can't imagine having to go through that at that age.  It's probably not as bad now as it would have been when I was that age, but bald 12-year-olds are definitely not the norm.  It's great that he has such a positivev attitude about it.
