Tried the el cheapo disposables tonight...
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:49:56 PM »
I'm sure some of you have read my thread on straight and safety razors already...

IN that thread there was a few links posted by another member detailing straight razor shaves - the how to's and benefits..

I spent much of my afternoon reading some of the websites discussing straight/safety razors - and I have decided to order one (for my face!)

Until it gets here - I decided to try something much different that the normal for my head (which has been shaving with Van Der Hagen soap and a mach III - no preperation..)

Anyway - on these sites - one of the big advantages discussed about using a straight/safety razor is that it is a single blade being used with precision - resulting in less irritation - less bumps, ingrown hair, razor burn... yada yada yada...

So my idea was to use a single blade disposable bic razor in place of the safety razor that is on it's way to my house now....

I wrapped my head in a hot towel for about 5 minutes, then I lathered my head with my Van Der Hagen soap (applied with a badger hair brush.)

Once soaped up I shaved once with the grain... Rinsed, and re-lathered.
Next shave was cross grain.... rinsed, and re-lathered.
Then - finished with a final against the grain.

After the final pass, I rubbed down with some witch hazel - then lubed up with some babyoil.

So, although this took me upwards of about 20-25 minutes, I now am sitting here with the slickest headshaves I think I've obtained yet. I have no burn - itch - razor burn - bumps or any other drawback that I have been getting with the mach III - and I think I could probably stretch the razor to at least one more shave!

So - I will continue this process for the next few days - unless I come across a major drawback...

Anyone else use disposables? Or has anyone had BAD experiences with disposables?

Ahhhh!!!!  Disposibles!!  Make them go away!!!  Noooo!!!!
(Yes, I tried a double bladed disposible and thought I was going to die!)
[Of course I didn't do any of the prep work.  Maybe if I did, then I wouldn't be so harsh on disposibles and they wouldn't have reminded me of blood letting and leaches and such. :/O  ]

Oh - btw I'm really tired, and after re-reading my thread I wanted to clarify a couple things...

I will only use the safety razor on my face - even though my post makes it sound like I will use it on my whole head - tired writing I guess lol.

I figured the shave on my face would be the best comparison for me when I get the safety razor.

I'm not sure if I'm even making sense anymore.... I really feel like a zombie right now.

Good night - hopefully some of you can read through my garbage to make out what I meant!

I have used a disposable Bic razor on the dome once with disastrous results. I have never tried a DE safety razor.

I've been using Schick Xtreme 3 Comfort Plus disposables whenever I'm traveling and can't bring my HB, or when I need to buy new blades for the HB.  They've given me great shaves, I think it's because the blades flex to contour to the shape of my head.  I don't think I could give up my headblade now that I've gotten used to it, but I like using these a lot more than my mach 3 for a secondary razor.  They're cheap too, picked up a 10 pack for $11, and they last for as many shaves as my mach 3 did.

I use xtreme3 by Wilkinson sword (don't know if they are the same as Schick?  They are flexible too, and have always given a great shave.  Then i go over the dome again with machIII just to get it extra smooth. 8)

I am pretty cheap about alot of things.  But this is one area that I will not skimp on.  I've tried before and it wasn't pretty.

Single blade disposable Bic Razors....,

I tried those once on my face and vowed never again to use them.
My face was on fire after shaving with one of those blades.

I know my facial hair is much coarser than the hair on my head. So maybe a headshave with with of those things wouldn't be that bad. But I'm not willing to second chance that.

Looking forward to reading about your future results.
I still find it hard to believe that  you had absolutely no burn - itch - razor burn - bumps or any other drawback.

I'm shocked too!! lol.

The only thing I can attribute it to is the preperation. I will shave again this morning and see what results day two will bring.

I did the same thing Schro did. I quickly disposed of my disposables. Terrible.

Ok so update from this morning's shave. Time spent shaving - 13 minutes total.

1. I got a decent shave out of the same disposable I used yesterday on my head. I had to shave some spots several times to remove all the hair. But, the end result was great. Smooth and slick!

2. The hair on my face compared to the hair on my head is like comparing a spaghetti noodle to a mcdonalds straw. The hair on my face is MUCH more coarse and firm than that on my head.

So - I tried to use the same razor as I had used on my head for my face - but I found it was not cutting the hair on my face at all - it actually just felt like tweezers pulling the hair out slowly - torture..

So, I opened a new disposable and shaved my face. Even with a new razor, the shaving of my face was horrid - so I can't attribute the bad shave to the fact that the razor went dull fast, but that the razor just does a crap job of cutting my coarse facial har.

I've just come to grips that my facial hair is just way to tough to get a good shave with a disposable.

Thus far - I am convinced that I can get as good an end result with a disposable as I can with a spendy - on my head that is... but that it's going to take me longer to get that result.

As for my face - Let's just say I'm looking forward to my safety razor!
